I was a childhood friend of his son Manny and remember the kind and wonderful times I spent with the family growing up in New York in our neighborhood of Elmhurst Queens , some of my best childhood memories were shared and my  thoughts and prayers are sent to family may he Rest In Peace.

Very sad to hear of the passing of Manny Senior.  He was an inspiration to me when we were playing softball together and he taught me a lot of lessons about life,  There was one time when I struck out in an important situation and I was frustrated and of course threw my bat and stomped off.   Manny came up to me put his around me in a very fatherly fashion and said in a calm and low keyed voice "Lou, you must put this behind you, the game comes back to you"

And as predicted I got another chance and that time I succeeded and I never forgot that lesson.  Not for baseball but for life.  You must put all of life's disappointments behind you because you will get another crack at it.  I have used that speech many times when coaching kids in baseball.

You will be missed but heaven now has a great sidearm pitcher who loves the game.

My heart goes out to the entire Alas Family. If the dictionary displayed a picture next to  the word "gentleman", Mr. Alas' picture would be prominent. Such warmth, gentleness, love for family and friends, genuine interest in others and so many more endearing qualities, paint a wonderful picture of this proud patriarch. I hope that all of the wonderful memories bring some comfort to you all in the days ahead. Sending prayers to the entire Alas Family and especially to Mrs. Alas.

Mr. A was just a wonderful, warm and loving man who cherished his family and especially Mrs. A so beautifully.  He will always be remembered with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes.  May you find comfort in all the wonderful times you have shared.   Sending all our love and support.

What is the first thing I think of when I think of Mr A?  -A Gentleman - is what comes to mind immediately.  I will always treasure my times spent with him and having open discussions on various topics.  It always included talks with smiles, jokes, and jabs traded, but always in a kind way.   I have told Manny and Tommy how  proud I was to be our backup third base behind Mr A in the depth chart. I looked at this as I am backing up a professional. The truth is, that is so true, I was the 11 man on 10 man team and for me that was a compliment to my average skills that they trust me behind him. I remember the day Mr A had a compound break on his glove hand because of a very hard hit ball he tried to field at third base.  And you could see the damage to the finger thru his glove.  He handled it like a pro and walked off the field like no problem.  Of course who replaces him at third, it’s me.   Well, we go through the opposition’s batting order and then the same hitter who smashed the ball down the third base line comes to bat.  Everyone on my team is trying to tell me or shall I say yell at me to be ready and I am like, I know. I’m trying to play it cool but deep down I am shaking like a leaf and thinking if Mr A couldn’t handle this hitter, how am I.  The outcome is another story but my point is Mr A was so unique. A Gentleman. 
From the story of how he left Cuba, played baseball, worked so hard for so many years in NYC, raising two great boys and always attending his kid’s and grandchildren’s activities, it speaks volumes of the man he was. I would say then my next word is ‘Family man’ to the utmost. 
Finally, his relationship with Mrs A was always something to treasure and watch. You never saw one without the other. Even at our softball games they were always together.  A great husband would be next to describe him. 
Mr A thanks for all the talks and allowing me to associate with a man with integrity and skills who demonstrated clearly with actions.  You will be missed greatly and remembered always.

Growing up as a teenager in the 70s with a group of friends and Siblings that always hung out together and to this day are close friends.   It was always a pleasure to go the Mr and Mrs Alas home.  They always treated us  so well.  Mr Alas was a great role model for us and always enjoyed talking with him.      We even had the pleasure of having him on our Softball team. The Slammers        He will surely be missed by all.     And our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs Alas and the family.    Love you Jim Tomlinson.
