Maria was born to the late Elvira and Orlandino Giuliani, on September 13, 1930, in Santa Maria Frascati (Introdaqua), Italy. She emigrated to the United States in 1952 and lived in the Bronx until 1955, when she married her husband of 29 years, Tony Susi Jr., in Columbus, Ohio.
Maria is survived by three children: Tony (Janet) Susi III, of Pickerington; Orlando Susi, of Columbus; Luciana (Tom) Ramsey, of Columbus; Grandchildren: Orlando Jr., Maria, Stephanie, Rachel, Phillip, Anita, Michael, Lindsey, Jordan, Gabrielle, and Spencer; Great-grandchildren: Adeline, Rocco, Gabriel, Luca, Vincent, Cato, Drago, Ella, Riley and Brody. Sherry Susi, of Reynoldsburg also survive her; Michael Ehren, of Davie Florida; sister-in-law’s Landa Giuliani and Antoinetta Giuliani; loving nephew and business partner Anthony (Vicki) Susi; many nieces, nephews, and her extended Berwick family.
She is predeceased by her loving husband, Tony, daughter Raffaella (Susi) Ehren, and brothers Antonio and Rino Giuliani.
Maria co-founded “The Berwick,” a Columbus landmark, in 1955 with her husband Tony. The restaurant was originally named The Berwick Seafood Manor and was renamed to The Berwick Manor when they moved to its current location. Maria was an integral part of the business throughout her life and was often found in the kitchen rolling meatballs, baking her famous rolls, or hosting the restaurant on busy weekend nights, never “officially retiring.” Her Italian work ethic was instilled into her children and grandchildren, who still run The Berwick today.
Fondly known as Aunt Maria, Mamma Maria, or Nonna, she treated everyone like family from the moment she met them. Maria called EVERYONE Baby, and her smile lit up the room. She was a mother, grandmother, family matriarch, and second mother to many.
Maria’s family wishes to thank the people of Columbus for the kindness you’ve shown Mamma Maria and her beloved “Berwick” for so many years. Love and thanks also go to Mindy Adams, Stacie Staley-Kinney, and the great staff at Ganzhorn Suites Specialized Memory Care, who cared for her so lovingly.
