

Mary Ater, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on May 31, 2025, at the age of 97. Mary was born in Columbus, Ohio to Sam and Rosie Nickoloff on February 27, 1928. Mary lived a long and full life, touching the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. Mary was a proud and dedicated employee of General Motors, where she worked for 33 years. Her work ethic and determination were hallmarks of her character, which was mirrored in all aspects of her life. Mary’s family was the center of her world. Whether it was gathered around the kitchen table or out on one of her shopping trips, she found immense joy in spending time with them. Mary had a passion for cooking and baking, making sure no one left her house hungry. She loved playing cards, especially euchre, and could always be counted on for a competitive and lively game. She had a lifelong love of sunshine, often found outside soaking up the sun. She also enjoyed working her puzzles, spending many quiet hours focused and content. Mary’s warmth, sense of humor, and generous nature made her a light in the lives of so many. Her legacy of love, laughter, and strength will continue to live on in her children, grandchildren, and all who knew her. Mary was preceded in death by parents Sam and Rosie Nickoloff, husband Dick Ater, brother Jack (Jennie) Nickoloff, sisters Sophie (William) Vernon and Doris (Harry) Cornelius, brother-in-laws Don Davis and Tom Kitsos, and daughter-in-law Cindy Garbuglio. She is survived by “her boys” Dominick Garbuglio, Frank (Maureen) Garbuglio, Joe (Debi) Garbuglio, grandchildren Ashley and Joe Garbuglio, and great-grandchild Rosalie Garbuglio. Survived by step-sons Neal (Pam) Ater, Keith (Vicky) Ater, grandchildren Lindsey (Tom) Alban, Matt Ater, Kelley (Brian) Deasey, Sarah (Jason) Dowdy, Molly (Curt) Halcom, and their families. Also survived by siblings Dominic (Norma) Nickoloff, George (Alice) Nickoloff, Evelyn Davis, Angie Kitsos, Louise (Ed) Wohlstein and many nieces and nephews that will miss her dearly.
Visitation will be on Friday, June 6, 2025 from 4-7pm at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, Ohio 43221. Following the visitation, there will be a prayer service with a eulogy and rosary said in her honor. Mass will be held at 10am on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 5750 N.
