Mary Embly of Columbus, Ohio, passed away Friday, May 26th, 2023. She was born in Hagerstown, Maryland, and was the third child of Mearl and Savilla “Della” Embly. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Bertha “Birdie” Elizabeth Swensen, who passed away Sunday, May 14th, 2023 and her big brother Mearl “Buck” Embly Jr.. During her childhood, Mary had a natural talent for drawing, painting, and ceramics. She was fiercely independent, strong-willed, and a force to be reckoned with if you attempted to hurt anyone she loved. Her compassion knew no boundaries and took anyone needing love and guidance under her wing.
First and foremost, she was loving, compassionate, and imaginative. She believed that creativity could help not only with art but with everything you do in life. Mary taught everyone she met to be secure in `their abilities and learn from their mistakes. She knew that mistakes help you grow and will never define you as a person. When she was not enjoying blasting her music and painting, she spent the day working in her flower gardens. The gardens were her artistic muse and subject to hundreds of paintings over the years. She loved flowers, particularly the oddly shaped and colored ones.
She attended the Columbus College Of Art and Design, where she majored in Fine Arts. Mary devoted 30 years of her life to helping to teach and inspire other artists as an employee with the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Suzan Thompson (Tricia Guenther), her best friend of 58 years, Anita Penn (Randy), and cherished friend JoAnn Drake. Many of her loving nieces and nephews; Donna McCoy, Lisa Palmer, Timothy Embly, Michelle Burkholder, Kelley Harvey, and Mark Harvey (Lara) shared Mary’s love of art and nature. Mary’s adopted family include sisters, Jeannette Lewis-Woodard (Ken) and Dorothy Lewis. She loved Stephanie and Stephen Drake, Sandra Cole, the Sadiq brothers, and Michael Holland as family from their childhoods. Mary also had two adopted grandchildren who she was very proud of, Yazmin Cole and Aaron Abercrombie.
