Mary E. Hedrick, age 91 formerly from Westerville, OH, passed away on Wednesday, June 13th, 2018. The mother of three daughters, she loved to go "to-ing and fro-ing" with the girls through their childhoods and into their adulthood. She was married 66 years to her one and only love, Jack R. Hedrick. The two met in Girard, Kansas, on a Saturday night at the town square. Jack thought that she was a cute blond with great legs. She saw him as a dark-haired man with a great smile. It was love at first sight.
As a woman of God, Mary taught Sunday school and headed women missions at Church. Although Mary loved to talk about her insurance career- and by God, she made everything about insurance one way or another- Mary started her working life as a school teacher in a one-room school house in Kansas, living with and teaching the students. She was also a garment worker and a talented cook. "Would fifteen kids, get out of my kitchen" she would yell at her daughters as they interrupted her time in the kitchen.
Lover of the finer things in life, Mary also adored Cheetos and the Phoenix and Dragon dish at Chai Thai. In fact, she had been looking forward to eating some Thai shrimp before she passed away.
An avid quilter and sewer, Mary threatened to take away Jackie's inherited sewing machine, if she didn't start sewing again.
She was a woman of conviction, and her family loved her for that. She also loved to be pampered and paid attention to. A keen watcher of CNN, the staunch Roosevelt democrat loved to watch and talk about politics. She enjoyed it almost as much as she enjoyed solving puzzles and playing Sudoku. She also loved watching her Reds play baseball.
Her family will miss her FaceTime and phone calls in the middle of the night the most.
Mary is survived by Jackie (Steve) Benton, Debbie (Brett) Matthews, and Patti (Tom) Jackson; grandchildren, Diana (Bruce) Van Bruggen, Debby (Philip) Gerth, Stevi (Marilia) Benton, Sarah (Justin) Bevins; and Ellen Jackson; 5 great-grandchildren, and many other extended family members and dear friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 A.M. Monday, June 18, 2018 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd., where family will receive friends from 1-4 P.M. Sunday. Interment Mifflin Township Cemetery.
