I worked with Mike at Stopwatch Pizza for a few years and continued to see him during his time with Digital Black.  I went to many, many of their shows.  I’d always ask him to do a specific trill or lick from the crowd by suggesting it to him through an “air guitar” and often times he would oblige.  I always remember laughing when I was around him. He had a great sense of humor.  I wish I could have seen him play with AthenA, but I had lost touch over the past few years.  At least I was able to find some of AthenA’s work on Reverbnation and could identify his unique sound and style.  

The service was wonderful.  I believe Mike would be extremely pleased with the way it turned out.  I certainly wish it hadn’t have happened though.  We lost a great guy.

Excelsior Mike.

Mostly I know Mike from my wife Chris's childhood stories, generally of Mike playing his guitar and singing loudly in his room and her wonderful impersonations of him, however, our son Kai and I did share a wonderful couple of weeks with Mike in Hawaii. It is a testament to Mike's open heart and gentle nature that he was an instant Uncle to Kai, playful, loving and engaged. My favourite story is that Nancy was getting Kai to make animal noises "What sound does a cow make?" etc. Seeing an opportunity in the absurdity of the conversation, Mike asked "Kai, what sound does a carrot make?" After a puzzling few moments, they decided a carrot made a sound like "Na Na Na Na..." (imagine a Ramones like rock and roll chant). This became a family joke for the rest of the stay and beyond. I feel so lucky to have had that time to get to know Mike, though I don't think he ever forgave me for dragging up to the top of Diamond Head! Mike's photo is still the only family pictue Kai has in his room. Thanks uncle Mike, we'll miss you.

i only knew Mike since october 2011. Mike was a great musician and worked hard at his music. He was also becoming a good friend to me. i appreciated his friendship and his music he made with his guitar. i would meet Mike at open stage/mic nights and we would tear it up and then sometimes we would go jam some more for several more hours. i also enjoyed seeing his fretwork while doing performances with his band Athena. Great guy and will be greatly missed. God bless Mike and all his family.

I have delayed in writing my condolences for as long as I could. Typically, I am a rational person when dealing with life. I am still finding all of this absurd. In talking with some of Mike's loved ones, I realize that I am not alone in wondering "why?". I was privileged to know Mike for the last decade. I have not yet begun to miss him for a much longer time. I am filled with mixed emotions in looking at this page and seeing the other writings. Beyond the sadness, I am brought some joy in seeing that Mike touched other's lives with his decency, talent and humor. Mike and I spoke last week and we ended our conversation talking about how we would / could end our "imaginary podcasts". Mike was a fan of Douglas Adam's writings and suggested that we should end each podcast with "So Long, and Thanks for all the fish". Truly absurd and funny.  My love and sympathy to all of Mike's family and friends.

The Columbus music scene has lost and incredible talent. Mike always had a smile on his face when I saw.him.... especially when he was playin his guitar in his unique way. I always looked up to Mike and will miss him dearly. My condolences to the family and friends through your time of loss.

I have not seen Mike for years but have many fond memories of fun times in band and school from Gahanna.  The news of his passing is so sad.  It looks like Mike had been following his dream for many years.  He was such a great guy and lots of fun to be around.

Nancy and Family,

I am so sorry to learn of Michael's passing.  I never got to meet him but if he had the personality and smile of his mother, I know I would have liked him a lot.     You are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

From the moment I met Mike, he was my friend. He came into my life at a very rough time and was able to make me smile when I didn't think that was possible. He was caring and kind, and could always make me laugh. I will miss him and am thinking and praying for his family and other friends.

The first time I saw Mike he was on stage (of course) and as he was jamming away.. he took off his shoes.. and the next time on stage.. no shoes.. I laughed so much and thought about who is this Hippie guy? For the past couple of years I have became the AthenA groupie and had many great laughs with Mike. He has got to be the most pleasant and down to earth man that I have had the pleasure to talk to. I found myself not only going to the shows to hear the great music but to have those few moments to joke with such a great guy. You will be missed my friend.
