He is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Sue, his daughter Dianne, his son Dean (Shelly), grandsons Alex Paynter (Lauren Braam), Andy Paynter, Ben Goss (Dori) and Zack Goss and two great-grandchildren, Roger Dean Goss and Ellery Braam Paynter, together with nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers and his parents.
Norval will always be remembered for his thoughtfulness in forwarding the newspaper clippings he thought might be of interest to numerous friends and relatives. He also diligently compiled family genealogical records going back to 1772 without the use of a computer. He will also be remembered for his beautiful and well-tended gardens.
He was the longtime organizer of the ABC (Columbus Academy, Bexley and Columbus School for Girls) reunions. Norval was also an accomplished tennis player, becoming a co-founder of The Racquet Club of Columbus and served as President of Swim and Racquet Club.
Norval and Sue vacationed for years on Sanibel Island, Florida, where Norval was an enthusiastic sheller, collector and cataloguer of seashells and enjoyed sharing his knowledge and his shells.
A lifelong educator, Norval retired as Assistant Superintendent of the Columbus City Schools having previously served as the Principal of Central High School and in many other administrative roles after beginning as a teacher at Central in 1954. He was a graduate of Bexley High School, Denison University (Bachelor of Arts and a proud member of Sigma Chi) and The Ohio State University (Masters in Education and huge Buckeye fan).
We always liked this picture of Norval serving in the Navy during the Korean War. He was also an Eagle Scout.
There will be no calling hours or memorial service. If you would like to remember Norval, please consider a donation to The Columbus Museum of Art, 480 E Broad St, Columbus OH, 43215, www.columbusmuseum.org or I Know I Can, 215 N Front St, Suite 200, Columbus, OH, 43215, www.iknowican.org.
