

Opal Sims, 91, of Circleville, departed this life on Monday, July 9, 2012. She was born July 5, 1921 in Noble County, the daughter of the late Clyde and Rebecca Young. Opal was also preceded in death by her only child, Jackie Ullman Whitten; her husband, Leon Sims; brothers, Clayton, George, Donald, Carlos and Robert; and her sister, Madeline Dickinson. She is survived by her granddaughter, Kagan Leigh Whitten of Bethesda, MD; son-in-law, Rick (Joyce) Whitten of Angier, NC; her brother, Walter Young; and several nieces and nephews. Opal was a member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church and also attended Community United Methodist Church. She graduated from Stafford (Ohio) High School and continued her education at Ohio University where she received her Bachelor of Science degree as well as a Master’s Degree in “supervision and Curriculum Development.” Her teaching career began at Wayne Township School in Pickaway County and continued on to Pickaway County and Circleville City Schools. While serving as Elementary Supervisor of Pickaway County Schools, she realized there were children that needed special help. Because of this she entered The Ohio State University in the area of psychology and received her School Psychology accreditation. Opal joined the Logan Elm School System as assistant to the superintendant where she remained until her retirement.
Funeral service will be held at 8:00 P.M. Thursday, July 12, 2012 at Defenbaugh-Wise-Schoedinger Funeral Home with Pastor Barry Burns officiating. Private burial will be at Forest Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 P.M. until the time of service on Thursday at the funeral home.
