Mom, it's been almost 7 years since you went to heaven - I miss you just as much as I did then and every time I see a cardinal, I think of you and Dad.  Love you more....

Eulogy for Patricia L. Glassburn page 2

She married young, at 17 to the love of her life, our Dad, Bob, and had two children by the age of 21 with third child by age 27.

She never gave up on her dreams – attending college classes when she could while still working, and later in life, encouraging her children to go to college.

Through all of this she continued working while raising her children – getting them to guitar, piano, dance and gymnastic lessons – I can’t even imagine the sacrifices her and Dad must have went through to be able to afford these special endeavors for all of us.

In addition to this she was a Camp Fire Girls leader for many years and several “girls” (now women) came by to pay their respects last night and spoke highly of Mom’s leadership – how much fun they had and all of the adventures they enjoyed under her direction.

She persevered at work in a male-dominated world without a college degree despite all of the odds.  She rose to an officer level position at Nationwide Communications Inc. because of her intelligence and quick wittedness, a position today that probably wouldn’t be filled by a person without a college degree.

She exhibited strength, love, toughness when needed, but was always there when you needed her.

She cared for her mother, family and anyone who needed a place to stay over the years.  I remember many family events at our home when she had everyone there to celebrate a holiday or a birthday.


I can’t express everything I would like to say today but would like to share the following:

My Mom knew her time to pass was coming, although she never said anything, but by several things we have found as we prepared for this service.  The song you just heard, The Prayer, we discovered on her laptop two nights ago and we knew she wanted it played today.


Last night I found a poem that I’d like to share:

To the living, I am gone.
To the sorrowful, I will never return.
To the angry, I was cheated.
But to the happy, I am at peace.
And to the faithful, I have never left.
I cannot speak, but I can listen.
I cannot be seen, but I can be heard.
So as you stand upon a sandy shore gazing at a beautiful sea – 
As you look upon a flower or rose and admire it’s simplicity – 
Remember me.
Remember me in your heart.
Your thoughts and your memories,
Of the times we loved,
The times we cried,
The times we fought,
The times we laughed.
For if you always think of me,

She also shared with us a poem that she liked and wanted read at her service (which is also on her life brochure) and it goes as follows:

I have so many things to see and do.
You must not tie yourself to me with tears
Be happy that we had so many years.

You can only guess how much you gave me in happiness.
I thank you for the love each of you have shown
But now it is time I traveled alone.
So grieve awhile for me if grieve you must

Though you cannot see or touch me, I will be near

Mom, I know you are with the angels, free of pain and suffering and with your family that have preceded you.   You have been not only a mother but also an inspiration to me in my life and to many others.  May your legacy and spirit live on, not only in me, but also in my father, brother, your granddaughter Samantha, and in so many people who love and care for you so very much.  I will be seeing you…..love you more and more and more

It is hard to put into words how to describe someone that had such an impact on so many lives.

My Mom, Pat, was a beloved wife to my father, an unforgettable mother and lovingly called “Nana” by her grandchildren, Samantha, Brittany and Blake.

She grew up very poor as a child and always aspired that she provide us with a better life than she had growing up.  I encouraged her in her later years to keep a journal of her memories and here are a few excerpts from that journal:


“Growing up the youngest of this many children and without a father, we had no luxuries.  But I was lucky because I had six brothers and a sister who doted on me.  At that time, few people owned cars and television had not yet been invented.  We did have a radio and I remember sitting by it, listening to the Lone Ranger and other radio broadcasts.

Halloween, at that time, was a big holiday.  We didn’t just have Halloween; we had Beggars’ Night, Pennies’ Night and then Halloween.  Costumes were devised out of anything you could find around the house and we sometimes blackened our faces with soot from the coal stove.  On Pennies’ Night, you would beg for pennies.  Mother would use these pennies to buy food.

One Christmas when I was very young, I was put to bed and my mother took up her usual sitting by the radio.  This was right around the corner of the wall where I slept.  I peeked around the corner and saw her sewing doll baby clothes for me for Christmas.  This was a very special Christmas for me as a result.

My brothers were all very handsome young men.  Bill, the oldest, is probably the one I remember the least since he was 17 years older than me and left home shortly after I was born.  John, the next eldest, was the father image in my life.  I remember waiting for him to come home from work.  He would get to the corner, whistle a special tune just for me and I would fly out the door and run to him.  He’d pick me up, put me on his shoulders and I would look in his shirt pocket for the lemon drops he brought me.

Today, when it is hot, we have air conditioned homes, cars, etc., and other things to cool us.  Back then the big treat was in the summer when it rained.  We played and splashed in the puddles.  There was no TV but you did have the radio to listen to.  In the summer, the kids would gather on the front steps and tell ghost stories.

I contracted whooping cough and as a result the doctor (or someone) told my Mom it left me with a weak heart.  I was not allowed to jump rope nor do anything strenuous in front of her, so I would go around in the alley and join the fun.

My mother was able to hang on and we lived on Fulton until I was about 14 years old.  During this time, I was growing up fast and had discovered boys.  Some friends and I went to a movie on West Broad Street at Harris Avenue.  There was a drugstore where all the kids hung out and it was here I met my future husband, Bob.

We were standing, waiting for the bus to take us back downtown and the boys came by in their cars offering a ride.  There were 3 of us, but we were afraid to get into a car with even 2 boys, but one car came along with a single guy.  And we allowed him to drive us downtown.  Some guys followed and one of them was Bob.  He found out where I lived and my phone number from my girlfriend and never let go.

I sure wish I had kept a journal all through my life, then for whoever is reading this it would make more sense, but maybe you can catch a good glimpse of my years on this earth.”

Mom, In 2 weeks it will be 2 years since you left. I still find it hard that you aren't here, but even harder to know that my dad (he is not daddy anymore to me) is still here. You and I use to joke that he would out live you, with his diabetes and all, and he sure did! It is so ironic to me to that you and Dick Sheldon passed within 2 days of each other too, you so  did not like him..haha. You would be so proud of Brit, she is a nurse at Mt.Carmel East!!!  She worked for a little over a year at a assisted living facility and she was in the dementia/alzheimer's unit. Mom, she is so amazing!!! You would be so proud of you, she would of taken such good care of you or dad if the situation was different...but I know you watch her from above. Blake is paving his own way in Hollywood. He landed his biggest role yet and will be on American Horror Story Oct 31!! It's on FX and its a huge show...there were lots of articles wrote about him on the internet, you would of gotten a kick out of reading them! I wish I could change alot of what has happened, but I know I can't. I can tell you this though mom, I miss my sister! My heart yearns for her!!  I wish I could go back and change everything that happened with her,I would apologize a trillion times and just hug MY BIG SISTER.  But I know I can't..she hates me. Mom, I miss you, and I love you!! Mom, I still miss you and grieve for you every day (even though I know you would tell me not to).  Samantha has become such a wonderful young woman and is taking great care of Dad with me remotely managing when needed. I only hope that each decision I am making for Dad and the family is one that you would make. 

Sam's wedding is coming up soon and I so wish you could be there.  Her wedding dress is beautiful.

This Mother's Day is so hard for me - I can't believe you're gone.  I am only glad you are not in pain but I so wish I could pick up the phone and call you!    I love you so much and more -- Debra

Hey nana :) papa, brad and I had dinner together tonight. I miss you more and more every day if that is even possible. This is ONE OF MY ways of still communicating to you and keeping your spirit alive. putting up the christmas tree and decorations next tuesday with papa! I told him we are making christmas cookies at his place this year b/c it just doesnt feel right doing it any other way. I just wanted to say that i love you more and thank you for not only being an amazing NANA but a great teacher in so many ways!! ttys :).... <3 u morexoxox

Mom, Blake has already received his SAG and Taft Hartley membership...he has only been in Hollywood for 3 months & has accomplished soo much. Britt has gotten stellar grades in her Nurses Aid class....you would be so proud. In 2012 he will be in a 20th Century Film...already!!  I said some really nice,truthful things on my first post but it was quickly erased by my sister....the same Anonymous person I am sure that donated the $$ to keep your memories online forever (as if you can read it)  When I look at the stars above I know you are shining bright..and I am glad you are free of pain. My dear Pat...I'm not real sure that "friend" is a big enough word to describe what you were to me...You've been the one I've turned to in the highest highs and the lowest lows of my life. You never fail to give me just what I need, whether it's comfort,understanding, or a swift kick in the pants. You "tell it like it is" because, in your heart, you want the best for me always. Not only were you my friend but I always thought of you as my adopted mother. You will always be in my heart.  love you....debbie

Aunt Pat used to say we never seemed like Aunt and Nephew as we were so close in age. She is only 4 years older than me. My fondest memories is when she used to live with use on Melrose and I use to drive her nuts when she had a date or something like that. She went to high school there and often we had to ride the bus together but I wasn't allowed to sit anywhere near her. Uncle Bob my heart goes out to you and I am truly sorry I haven't kept closer in touch with both of you over the years. The picture of her is most appropriate as that is exactly the way I remember her.

My Aunt Pat was my idol growing up - how much I longed to be like her!  And, later in my life, I realized how much of a great lady she was, by having my grandmother live with her.  I spent many happy visits in her home - always trying to watch what she did, so I could try do live like her.  I started painting my toenails at a young age, because Aunt Pat did - I became a secretary at Marathon Oil, because that's what Aunt Pat was - I remember there was even a time, when I wanted her to adopt me!  My last visit with her will never be forgotten.  She was still the lady that I remembered, and I felt more connected with her than ever. Growing up with Doug, Debbie and Trish I have many great memories of Pat and Bob.  What an excellent person and sure to be missed everyday.  She sure did know how to raise some wonderful kids.  Her legacy will live on!  My deepest regrets and all my thoughts will be with you all.  Your friend always.

My Thought and prayers go out to the Glassburn family.  I have many, many fond memories of Pat from when she was my Camp Fire leader for 10 years.  She was a great leader and inspiration to all of us.  The fun memories of camping, traveling to Michigan, Canada and Washington D.C. and our time capsule.  I will always keep her memory in my heart. I worked with Pat for 25 years at Nationwide. She was with NCI and I was the Director of Tax for Nationwide  It was with a sad heart when I read the obits today. She could talk the talk but she could also  walk the walk. God has Pat in his hands.

Being the newest member of the Glassburn family I am saddened by the fact that I won't get to know Pat the way I had hoped. However, I can say that I felt an immediate connection with her and felt the same from her. I would describe Pat as "intuitive" and always a step ahead of most. I will miss her greatly. I could have learned a lot from that very wise woman. I love you "Mom". Karen Glassburn

I am really going to miss my dear Golden Hobby Shop buddy, Pat.  What a dear soul!  I've been a pretty regular customer at Golden Hobby Shop for several years and Pat always provided me with great customer service.  She really loved that place!  I was just there a few weeks ago on a Saturday morning when she happened to be there for a bit helping out.  She told me to come back to the work room and sit down.  We had a nice little visit and caught up.  Before I left we hugged and she wished me a happy Halloween.  I'll see you later, Pat, on that beautiful shore of Heaven and we'll get caught up again!  I'll be praying for you all, Pat's family!  Sorry for your great loss!

Mom, I am in total shock and would be in disbelief if I hadn't been  there holding your hand as you began your journey to heaven. I miss you more than words can say, it takes all I got to get thru each day. You taught me so much and how to walk the straight and narrow and be brave and strong on those darkest days. I'll be there to watch out for Dad and help thru these tough times just as you would want and as you said its part of the Ten Commandments to love and honor thy parents, I'm glad your no longer suffering or in pain. Everyone says that God works in mysterious ways and not to question but I do. Perhaps its how you earn your wings as an angel, which I know you are now! I Love You back  oh so much  and forever!!

My Nana was extremely special to me, even though we lost touch and I didn't get to see her I thought about her everyday. I remember watching Annie the movie together every weekend when I was younger and going in the sunroom and watching her make my american girl doll clothes. My Nana was the greatest grandma anyone could ever ask for and if I could talk to her one last time I would want her to know I never stopped loving her. During Christmas every year my Nana would take my brother and I to the store to pick out gifts for everyone in the family and we would all wear matching santa hats, I wish more than anything to go back to that time. I remember the song she would always sing to me when I was sad, but since she can't sing it to me I will sing i to her. Nana, you are my sunshine my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are grey, you'll never know dear how much I love you so don't you take my sunshine away. Love you more Nana

I always thought Aunt Pat was cool and sophisticated. She and Uncle Bob were fun to be with, especially when riding in one of Uncle Bob's Pontiacs. I admired her organized and well-kept home. I wish I could have been closer during my adult years to the Glassburns--we will meet again!

I too remember how strong of a lady Aunt Pat was in everyway.
She also took care of her mother, my grandma and that remains special in my heart.
Most of al I will be ever grateful for allowing THE BOYS for staying with her when my mother passed away at the age of nine years old.
The boys were myself and my three brothers Chuck,John and Don.
Mayshe rest in peace.

My Aunt Pat was so special to me in many ways; she and Uncle Bob took me in when I was fresh out of high school and taught me how to behave as an adult in this old world! I admire her strong will, her business knowledge, she had so much sel-esteem! Always had us at her home for family gathering and unfortunately as we all grew we also grew apart! I'm so glad she allowed me to be part of her life and will miss dearly! Uncle Bob well my prayers are with you and also Doug,Deb,Trish and all of their family's.
