

The Reverend Dr. Arthur Sanders, age 94 of Upper Arlington, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 9, 2011, at Kobacker House. Art was born in Hartford, Connecticut on November 12, 1916 to the late Harry and Agnes Santoorjian. He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Violet Rennie Sanders. Art graduated as a National Honors Society member from Hartford High School. He began studying economics at Trinity College in Hartford and graduated from Illinois College in Jacksonville Illinois, in 1940. Several years later, Art responded to God’s call to ministry. In 1945, he received the Master of Divinity degree from Hartford Theological Seminary, was ordained at Center Church in Hartford, and became the minister of Federated Community Church in Hampden, Massachusetts, where he served for 14 years. For eight of those years, during the month of August he served as director of Camp Asto Wamah in Columbia, Connecticut. In 1959, he joined First Community Church in Columbus, Ohio, where he served as Minister of Pastoral Care for 27 years and remained as Pastor Emeritus until his death. Art received the Master of Sacred Theology degree in 1960 and in 1972 he earned the Doctor of Ministry, both from Andover Newton Seminary. Art was a progressive in theological thought and counseling practice – always ahead of his time. Art’s doctoral dissertation, rooted in the work of Carl Jung, focused on the presence of both the feminine and masculine in all people. He was licensed in Ohio as a Professional Counselor and was a Fellow in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.Art was committed to the wider community as well as the church, serving on the Board of Directors of the Florence Chrittenton home, Columbus United Way, First Community Village Board of Trustees and many other groups. He was an avid golfer and a member of The Ohio State University Golf Club for over 30 years, actively playing until two years ago. Art and Vi shared a passion for sports of all kinds and a love for the ocean, spending many summer vacations at Cape Cod surrounded by their family. Art enjoyed classical music and the visual arts and was a gifted artist in his own right, painting with watercolors. In addition to his wife, Art is survived by his daughter Lynne Sanders Goslee and son-in-law Dr. Timothy Goslee of Falmouth, Mass., son Bruce Sanders and daughter-in-law Diane Sanders of Poway, Cal., daughter-in-law Lynn Sanders of Powell, Oh.; grandchildren, Jill Goslee Bailey (Dr. Gregory), Amy Goslee DeWitt (Andrew), Dr. Matthew Goslee (Dr. Julie), Dr. Timothy J. Goslee (Dr. Lindsay), Molly Sanders Koustmer (John), Julie Sanders, Jay Sanders (Jamie), Kathryn Sanders-Smith (Dan), and Collin Sanders (Jill); and 16 great grandchildren, Molly and Meagan Bailey; Rosemary, Egan, Graham, and Timothy DeWitt; Zachary and Josie Goslee; Preston, Carson, Nolan, and Peyton Sanders; Weston, Miles, and Skylar Koustmer; and Max Sanders.Art is also survived by his brother, Harry and wife Sabrina Sanders and his sister Grace Chamberlin.
