Born on April 18, 1946, in Buffalo, New York, Dick was the son of Sydney James Martin and Frances Beatrice Martin. He proudly served his country as a medic in the United States Army before pursuing higher education later in life at Columbus State Community College, where he served as president of his class. He earned his degree in nursing and dedicated 20 years of his career as a compassionate psychiatric nurse, touching countless lives with his steady presence and caring heart.
Dick was larger than life in the very best way. An avid golfer, he proudly celebrated a hole-in-one and could tell the story better than anyone. He loved a good card game, an ice-cold beer shared with friends, and cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes — though he famously refused to wear team gear during games out of pure superstition.
Family was the center of Dick’s world. He was a devoted and loving husband to Barbara J. Martin, whom he married on February 11, 1989. Their love story spanned decades until Barbara’s passing on July 25, 2025. He adored the children in his family, happily letting them dress him up and style his hair, moments that brought him endless joy. He was the family’s speech giver at gatherings, a gifted storyteller whose words could fill a room with laughter or heartfelt reflection.
He is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Stacie (Dale) Mosley; his son, Gary (Sue) Yoder; grandchildren Raemi (Matt) Paxton, Kristina Yoder, Patrick (Alison) Yoder, Benjamin Yoder, Ruby Fitzer, and Sid Fitzer; and great-grandchildren Ezekiel Paxton and Aurelia Paxton. He is also survived by his in-laws, Mike and Ann Skinner, and Pam and Alan Fenn; nieces Meghan (Art) Jordan and Erin Skinner (Adam Eddy), Emily (Adam) Lesser, and nephew Benjamin Fenn, along with four great-nieces and one great-nephew; his best friend, Mike (Marilyn) Baker; and countless friends and extended family who loved him dearly.
Dick will be remembered for his warmth, humor, unwavering love for his family, and his ability to make everyone feel welcome. His stories, laughter, and steady presence will live on in all who knew him.
As per Dick’s wishes, there will be no immediate service. His life will be celebrated on April 18, 2026, what would have been his 80th birthday.
In Dick’s honor, donations may be made to My Mom's Mind, a not-for-profit organization founded in honor of his beloved Barb, supporting families struggling to afford the high cost of dementia care, at www.mymomsmind.org.
