Robert “Bob” Henry Melcher, Jr., of Conneaut, Ohio passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, March 1, 2026 in Canal Winchester, Ohio at the age of 72. Born on August 3, 1953, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the cherished son of Virginia (Thomson) Melcher and Robert Henry Melcher, Sr., both of whom preceded him in death.
Bob was also preceded in death by his beloved nephew, David Gillespie; his childhood friend, Mark Brumbaugh; and his faithful feline companion, Tommie.
A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Bob adored his family beyond measure. He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Ruth (Donahue) Melcher, with whom he built a life full of laughter, adventure, and unwavering partnership. He leaves behind his twin sons, Michael Melcher and Daniel (Samantha) Melcher, who were his pride and greatest joy. Nothing made Bob happier than watching his boys grow—especially cheering them on in sports and teaching them invaluable life skills. His love multiplied with the arrival of his grandchildren, Lydia and Henry Melcher. Whether playing “mermaid” with Lydia or sharing his passion for carpentry with the next generation, being Grandpa was one of his most treasured roles.
Bob is also survived by his devoted sister, Lynette (Rudy) Slama, affectionately known as “Lee Lee”; sisters-in-law, Mary Gillespie and Paula (Mike) Stanko; his nephew, Rudy (Amelia) Slama; nieces, Cory (Sam) Vaimberg and Jill (Steve) McMurray; nephews, Sean Stanko and JJ (Molly) Stanko; great-nephews, Grayson and Leo McMurray and Colton Stanko; great-niece, Nina Gillespie; and many dear friends and neighbors.
Bob grew up in the Cleveland area and was a devoted member of St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church in Mayfield Village, Ohio.
A true Renaissance man and talented artist, Bob’s interests were as wide as his abilities. He expressed his creativity through music, art, and craftsmanship. He loved listening to music and playing many instruments over the years, sharing that joy with family and friends. His artistic eye and skilled hands were evident in his carpentry, deck building, and countless home improvement projects that reflected both beauty and precision.
He had a lifelong passion for the outdoors and adventure, enjoying camping trips, boating excursions, and the freedom of motorcycles.
He was an enthusiastic sports fan who proudly supported the Cleveland Indians, the Cleveland Browns, and the Ohio State Buckeyes—remaining, as always, a dedicated Browns fan through every season. He especially cherished time spent with his friends in the “man cave,” where fun times were had and friendships strengthened.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00–5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at the Conneaut Arts Center, 1025 Buffalo St., Conneaut, Ohio 44030.
The family extends a special and heartfelt thank you to Sanctuary Hospice and Bob’s sister-in-law, Mary Gillespie for their loving care of and compassionate support during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bob’s honor to any local Animal Protective League.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Schoedinger East, Columbus, Ohio.
