

Scott Cory Smart, 53, a 14-year math teacher at Worthington Christian Middle School, passed away unexpectedly on May 11, 2014 at OhioHealth Westerville Medical Campus following a brief illness. Born May 21, 1960 in Marion to the late John E. and Marilyn Smart, Scott was a 1978 graduate of Marion Harding High School and a 1982 graduate of Otterbein University, with majors in math and economics. Scott married the former Dione Dean, who survives, on September 16, 1989. He doted on his family, which also includes a daughter, Rachel, a student at Mt. Vernon Nazarene College. He especially delighted in Rachel's achievements on the theater stage and in her future teaching career. He is also survived by a sister, Sheryl (Kevin) Hall of Marion, a brother, Stephen C. (Cindy) Smart of Charleston, S.C., and several nieces and nephews. A kind-hearted person with a great sense of humor, Scott made friends wherever he went and loved the thought of a sunny day on the golf course. His faith was his compass, and he was an active member of Heritage Christian Church in Westerville. After graduating from college, Scott worked for many years in the insurance business, then founded a company, Smart Business Systems, to serve small businesses with technological needs. In 2000, he discovered his love of teaching and thoroughly enjoyed his middle schoolers. Calling hours will be 5-8 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2014 at Heritage Christian Church,7413 Maxtown Rd., Westerville, OH 43082, with a funeral service scheduled for 10 a.m. at the church on Saturday, May 17, 2014. A graveside service and burial will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the Marion Cemetery in Marion, Ohio. SCHOEDINGER NORTH CHAPEL is serving the family.
