A native of Clyde, Ohio, Tom was a proud graduate of Ohio University, where he later served on the Alumni Board of Trustees. After managing a successful clothing store in Athens, he co-founded Woodhouse Lynch Clothiers, an iconic clothing store in Columbus, for nearly 50 years. Described by one customer as "the mayor of Broad Street," Lynch outfitted many of Central Ohio's most influential and successful government, business, and community leaders - including Woody Hayes.
"He'd always go the extra mile and work hard because the customer always came first," former Mayor Greg Lashutka said.
Lynch was more than a retailer; he was a confidant, a joke teller, and a friend who would remind you that it was your mother's birthday. He was widely known as someone who had never met a stranger. He possessed a kind spirit and love of God that emanated from all he did.
If a homeless person would wander into his store, Tom would take them to a local soup kitchen that would offer help. "You just have to be nice to people,” he said, “all people," a sentiment that defines his legacy.
He was well known throughout Columbus for his contributions and endeavors. They included being a steward of the Catholic Foundation, a member of the Ohio University Foundation, past president of the Athletic Club of Columbus and the Columbus Touchdown Club.
He is preceded in death by his father and mother, A.C. and Helen Lynch; niece, Susan (Lynch) Hosket. He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 30 years, Mary Lou Lynch; children, Thomas (Shawna) Lynch, Jr., Michael (Lisa) Lynch, Kelly (Greg) Ramey, Wendy (Col. Gregg) Athey, and Matt (Jenny) Williamson; brother and sister-in-law, Jim (Hope) Lynch Sr.; grandchildren, Megan (Colin) Bellantis, Holly (Chad) Lynch Fritz, Rev. Thomas (Lauren) Lynch, III, Ben Ramey, Dr. Alex (Nicole) Athey, and Andrew, Nathan, and Abigail Williamson; nephew Jim (Kim) Lynch; great grandchildren, Caleb, Cohen, Hannah, Jay, Willa, and Emmitt.
