Walter Edward Downey

Walter Downey, 76, of Columbus passed away at Select Specialty Hospital on the morning of Monday, February 11, 2019. Walter is survived by his wife, Karen (Fiedler) Downey; children, David Downey (Kirsten), Chris Downey, and Debbie Beers (Mark); and five grandchildren, Ashley, Ethan, Holly, Brooke, and Zachary. He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Margaret Downey and sister, Susy. Walter was born in Columbus, Ohio and attended Bishop Watterson High School. He graduated from The Ohio State University and met his wife of 50 years, Karen, while serving in the Air Force in Burns Flat, Oklahoma. They wed on September 14, 1968 and returned to Columbus where Walter worked for and retired from The Ohio Company. Walter and Karen raised three children and were actively involved throughout the kids' time at The Wellington School, especially with the Athletic Boosters, and never missed a single game that the kids played. Walter had a passion for carpentry and home projects, willing to help anyone who needed it. He adored his grandchildren and loved to see them laugh. He spent many summers fishing with his family on the Pickerel River in Ontario, though his true love was Disney World, where he celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary in September. The funeral will take place at 10:30 AM on Friday, February 15, 2019 at St. Andrew Church, 1899 McCoy Road, Columbus, Ohio 43220, with a reception immediately following. Donations may be made to the Central Ohio Diabetes Association, 1100 Dennison Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43201. Family has entrusted SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL with final arrangements
