Much love to my grandfather, Bill Hess.  He will always be remembered for the love he shared and his enthusiasm for life.  What an incredible life he lived.

Grandpa loved to write letters.  The last one I received in the mail included a news clipping from the Dispatch about the planned high speed rail line between Chicago and Columbus and a note that we should definitely try it out and come for a stay at the Hess residence.  (This was a much better letter than the one he sent previously, which included a news clipping about student riots at my alma mater.)  

I am so grateful for the memories shared and for the blessing of having Bill as our family's patriarch.  Just as family and friends were always on his mind, I will always be thinking of him.  Grandpa, you will be missed.

During the service today I was repeatedly reminded by friends and family of things I already knew about my grandpa, Bill Hess. That he was a kind man, who's heart was every bit the size of his personality. That he would regale you with a story on just about any topic, especially those involving his own, or those close to him's life experiences. That he had a love for his family that can't be described in words. That he was passionate about sailing, cars, work, and life as a whole. 
I'm proud to have known and be related to a man who will continue to live on within us as a cheerful, positive memory. Thank you all for sharing the memories you have of my grandpa. I know there are many more memories out there, and many other qualities he is remembered by as well.
The greatest thing I could say about a person is that I'd be happy to walk in their footsteps through life. I know this is true for me of my Grandpa Bill.

I always appreciated that Bill enjoyed reading my MainSheets, and would let me know if his copy failed to arrive in the mail. Fair winds and calm seas, Bill -- sail on, sailor.

Thank you so very much for sharing your thoughts and memories with us!  You can imagine just how dear they are to receive.   Among so much else I could share this morning, I just want to state how greatly blessed my family has been by the length of my father's life.

Bill was much more than the father of my friend, Mark. He provided material for several chapters in my own journey through life. First, he was an avid sailing competitor. We shared many adventures racing at venues around the country but none perhaps as epic as the "tornado of Toledo." A storm/tornado flattened the fleet racing in Maumee Bay and we rode it out at anchor next to Bill. 
He was responsible for my foray into iceboating. Attending a Christmas party one night, Bill struck a deal with someone and by the time he left the party he was the proud owner of an iceboat. None of us knew anything about it but before the week was out Mark and I absconded with it and headed north until we found ice in Michigan. We were hooked and all three of us acquired iceboats. We put hundreds of miles on those boats chasing each other around Buckeye Lake. He and I were once running side by side trying everything to gain just a little more speed to pass the other. He was pressing hard and giving it everything he had until suddenly the mast blew up. Just this summer he was still recalling that day which neither of us would forget. 
The other thing I admired about Bill was his craftsmanship. Whatever project he was working on it turned out beautifully. He could lay down a coat of paint or varnish that looked like glass. Whether it was the wood deck on his Comet or the paddle for the same boat, it was gorgeous. He loved to take on projects or build things and many of his projects at Leatherlips Yacht Club lasted for decades. 
I wish I could sit down and watch the rest of the America's Cup races with him, but I am sure he has a much better seat.

It will be 48 years ago in January that I met the world's greatest boss.  He turned out to be my Mentor, Best Friend. The stories we could tell about Dorcy Cycle then Dorcy International. He  taught all his employees the lesson of Honesty and Hard Work and that was what made our company so successful. Bill you will truly be missed. May you rest in peace. Love you forever.

I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the Hess Family. May those precious memories of your dear loved one William be foremost in your hearts and minds along with this wonderful promise that Jesus made at John 5:28,29. Again, my sincere condolences.
