

William Nathan Mendell passed on June 2, 2011, in peace at home according to his last wishes. He was born on April 24, 1916, in Columbus, Ohio. His first residence was 376 E. Beck St. in German Village, where he, his brother, and parents lived above and ran a one room grocery store. He was a graduate of The Ohio State University. He earned a B.A. in Journalism, in Sept. 1939 Phi Beta Kappa, and a Masters Degree in Political Science, in June 1940. He taught night classes to adults in International Political Relations. He was offered a scholarship from N.Y.U. to earn a Ph.D., but was one of the first Ohioans to be drafted to serve in WWII. He was the Editor in Chief for The Ohio State University newspaper The Lantern. He met his wife Ruth in the summer of 1941. They were married September 14, 1942. After the war he worked at the Veteran's Administration finding jobs for veterans. Later, he worked at General Electric Evendale, in Cincinnati, Ohio inspecting parts for military planes. He transferred to G.E. in Washington, D.C., in 1963 where he sold jet engines and radars for military planes overseas. He later became a personnel manager. In 1975 he returned to Columbus to be an office manager for his brother, Leon E. Mendel, Esq. He retired in 1987. He was preceded by his parents, Irwin and Mollie Mendel, and brother, Leon Mendel, brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Betty Shuman, and niece, Debra Shuman. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Ruth (Shuman) Mendell, daughters, Melissa Mendell and Sonny Davis, and granddaughter, Tatiana Mendell. Also he is survived by his niece, Luona Shuman, nephews, Dr. Lawrence (Linda) Mendel, David (Teresa) Mendel, Andrew (Ellen) Mendel, and niece, Janet (Michael Newman) Mendel. Also, he leaves ten grand-nieces and nephews, and one great great nephew, Avery Mendel. Funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. Sunday, June 5, 2011 at SCHOEDINGER EAST CHAPEL, 5360 E. Livingston Ave. Rabbi Misha Zinkow officiating. Interment Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Temple Israel Section.
