William “Bill” More Ryder passed away on May 25, 2025, at Riverside Hospital. Born in Ashtabula, Ohio, on June 20, 1958, he was the beloved son of William Charles Ryder and Clara More.
Bill’s life was defined by service, curiosity, and connection. He graduated from The Ohio State University, where he was a member of the ROTC program. His commitment to his country led him to serve in the U.S. Navy, where he worked with submarines and later served as part of the military police while stationed in Guam. Following his military service, Bill returned to Columbus, where he completed his studies at OSU and embarked on a long and successful career in computer technology, dedicating many years to CompuServe.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bill dedicated himself to many meaningful pursuits. He was a Notary Public and an Ordained Minister, officiating weddings with warmth and sincerity. He was a committed Red Cross volunteer medic, serving with courage and empathy at Ground Zero. His passion for education led him to become a certified substitute teacher for Columbus Schools, inspiring young minds. A licensed Ham radio operator, he loved communicating and connecting with others in this unique way. Bill was also a longtime volunteer at Perkins Observatory in Delaware, Ohio, sharing his enthusiasm for astronomy with visitors. His love for history and camaraderie made him an active participant in local Renaissance festivals, where he found joy in reenactment and community.
Bill was deeply cherished by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother Malcom of Cleveland, Ohio. He is survived by his sisters Becky (Eric) Klang and Claudia Ryan of Minnesota, and Darcy (Sean) Crimmins of Folsom, California and sister-in-law Brenda Ryder. He is also survived by his brothers Dave (Connie) McKay of Westerville, Ohio, and Matthew (Brenda) Bardasian of Fair Oaks, California. Bill was a beloved uncle to his many nieces and nephews across the United States, with whom he enjoyed playing board games such as Axis and Allies with during holiday gatherings. He also built a strong and meaningful community in Columbus, forming lasting friendships through the many groups he was involved in over the years.
Bill consistently found ways throughout his life to give back to his country and community, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
A memorial service will be held at the Rittman, Ohio burial site, with the date to be determined. Burial will take place at the same location when arrangements can be made.
