Cynthia “Cindy” Sue (Gray) Melton, 69, of North Little Rock, Arkansas, departed this life on June 15, 2021. No services are planned at this time; private family services are anticipated at a later date. Cindy was born on December 16, 1951 in Lawrence, Kansas. The daughter of a Kansas Highway Patrolman, Cindy moved around Kansas often, living in the cities of Lawrence, Topeka, and Wichita. After graduating from Topeka High School, Cindy achieved a lifelong dream of becoming a Jayhawk by studying at the University of Kansas, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Music. Cindy then moved to Charleston, South Carolina before her final relocation to North Little Rock, Arkansas. Cindy is also an alumna of the University of Central Arkansas. Her pursuit of knowledge and expertise led her to complete a Masters in Music Therapy, Special Education, and numerous other graduate certificates. Cindy began her career with the North Little Rock School District in 1980 as a special education teacher, dedicating more than 38 years to the children of the community. Cindy continued to advance within the district, being appointed as an Assistant Principal and Principal. Cindy’s indelible legacy can still be felt today in the halls of Amboy and Crestview Elementary Schools. Cindy also worked in the former North Heights, Park Hill, and Bellwood Elementary Schools. Her love and compassion for her students, faculty and fellow educators is her greatest accomplishment and will not be forgotten easily by those that knew her. Cindy’s greatest joys in life were simple pleasures. She immensely enjoyed a good book and could be found most often immersed in the pages of a novel. She had an excellent green thumb and raised numerous rare houseplants with ease. Cindy greatly enjoyed Arkansas summers and the beach, lambasting the cold whenever she could. Lastly, Cindy continued to root for her beloved Jayhawks throughout her life; during football and basketball season it was not uncommon to hear a “Rock Chalk” from her vicinity at random! Cindy is survived by her children, William (Danelle) Melton of Killeen, Texas and Benjamin (Kelli) Melton of Vilonia, Arkansas as well as her sister in law, Pamela Gray, of Valley Center, Kansas. Cindy was the beloved “Grams” to four grandsons: Caleb, Steven, Adam, and Jacob as well as four granddogs: Toby, Orion, Ares, and Phoebe. Cindy was preceded in death by her parents, Carl Gray Jr. and Margery Kaufman Gray, and brother, Jesse Gray. William and Benjamin request that any family member or friend who wishes to make a contribution please do so to the American Cancer Society in honor of the Gray family.

I just last week found out about the death of my friend and coworker Cindy Melton. I am sad to know that she is gone from this world. I always felt a jolt of delight whenever I saw her. The first time we met we immediately noted our shared vision—her having come from special education background with the special educator’s consistent mantra that all children can learn. Throughout the time I knew her, she worked to implement practices and oversee practices that would make her vision a reality. She was tireless, focused, abundantly energetic, organized, funny, compassionate, and an overall great human being. My deepest condolences to her family and to all her friends in this loss.

I was so sad to hear the news of Cindy Melton passing. I worked with her at Crestwood for several years and she was a very hard working and dedicated lady. She loved the students and always did the best for them.
She was a very private person, but loved to talk about her grandsons. She would go to all their sporting events and brag about them. She was their biggest fan! She was so proud of her family.
She was very special and will be dearly missed.
My deepest condolences goes out to her family.

I was saddened to hear of Ms. Melton's passing. I had the privilege of working with her at Park Hill and we met up again at Crestwood Elementary. Her favorite meal coming into the cafeteria was Chicken Nugget Day. I always appreciated her kind words and loved seeing her genuine love for all the children. She will definitely be missed. I will cherish the memories I have of her.

I am so sorry to hear about Ms. Melton’s passing! I was blessed to roam the halls of Amboy and Park Hill Elementary while she graciously served as Assistant Principal there while I was a student there. She was always so fun and energetic. I loved the way she played the piano at our various assemblies and events. Her son, Bill and I met each other at a very young age and was my classmate for years. We will keep the entire family in our prayers during such a difficult time.

I am so sad to hear of Ms. Melton’s passing. I had the privilege to work alongside Ms. Melton at Crestwood Elementary School for several years. She was a very hard worker and loved our Crestwood Family and kiddos so much. She made me feel very welcome at Crestwood and was always there to help out in any area that needed her. We often talked of her boys because I also had 3 sons. We always said boy Mom’s were special! Many blessings and prayers are sent your way during this tough time. May our Heavenly Father comfort as only He can .

I taught at Crestwood while Mrs. Melton served as assistant principal. She immediately made me feel right at home as we had a connection that she was an administrator when my brother was in elementary school. She knew my family and I felt like I could trust her. She was always available to talk to and very attentive. She made you feel like you were the only one that mattered. She was very diligent in her profession, extremely thoughtful, and loved kids! She will be so missed! Praying for the family.
