Writing an obituary for your 11 year old son is one of the hardest things that can be asked of a parent. How do you sum up your child’s life to a few short paragraphs and how do you know when you’re finished? For those reasons, we solicited help from our friends and family in hopes of creating the greatest tribute to Nathan.
Nathan was an amazing, tender-hearted older brother, sweetest big cousin and loyal friend. He had a great appreciation for life, far beyond his years. His smile and laugh were contagious. His sense of humor will be one of the things that I continue to play over and over in my mind. “Nathan would be rolling his eyes right now” or “I know Nathan would be laughing with you”.
Nathan means a gift from God, and that he was. He was full of life, laughed with his whole body, had dance moves that caught the attention of a room (or Disney World), gave frequent “huggies” to show love and had such a silly spirit. He left an imprint on many hearts with his unique balance of gentleness, positivity and true wit. Nathan was a real-life superhero to many, with quiet strength and courage, even amongst the most challenging days, he never complained, instead he persevered with a smile on his face paired with exquisite style.
He was a tender big brother, showing his love with the infamous “huggie”. He had a deep connection with his parents, with roots of faith, fun and love. He loved visiting his extended family, especially playing the important role of cousin. He was a loyal friend, kind to all and loved those for who they were. He was a beautiful artist and showed his creative side building worlds within video games.
Nathan loved to travel, exploring the sites of Disney, his Make-a-Wish Trip, Florida, Michigan, a Caribbean Cruise and many Duluth trips; enjoying pools, beaches, hot tubs, time with friends and family, pizza buffets, cool rides (just not too fast) and even his first blizzard. For local adventures, there’d be frequent trips to arcades, trampoline parks, water parks, boating, swimming or backyard shenanigans. Nathan always made time for a good adventure.
Nathan was the sweetest big cousin to Vinny and Gemma. Vinny’s favorite memory is “when he plays skylanders.” Nathan was always happy to let Vinny cuddle up with him and watch whatever he was playing. He was sweet and gentle with Gemma and was the most caring and compassionate soul. Nathan’s strength and resilience was amazing with everything he went through. He kept a positive attitude and was a happy kid despite his health challenges. Nathan taught us about living your best life and never giving up. He tried new things and did his best even when the task was insurmountable. Nathan gave grace when we didn’t have the answers for him and loved unconditionally.
Nathan possessed strength, perseverance and the ability to stay positive sharing his smile no matter what challenges he faced. His deep love and gentle affection for his little sister Audrey was always noticed. His compassion for others made it easy for him to open his heart with great excitement as he welcomed his little brother, Gabe, into his family.
Grandma & Grandpa Faul shared special memories of teaching Nathan how to drive an ATV. Though the strength it took to maneuver the turns was difficult his determination was stronger, ending with a huge smile of accomplishment. Remembering Nathan and Grandpa comparing stories of their broken arms and casts over a video call, and Nathan’s giggles of pride after beating Grandpa in a game of Go Fish.
Grandma & Grandpa Blowers will always remember Nathan's generous soul and beautiful spirit; he walked into many people’s lives and made us better by showing his strength and courage. This crazy jokester will be remembered and greatly missed by his family and friends.
Auntie Robin & Uncle Adam shared a special message, "Nathan you are the strongest kid we know! Your fighting sprits and your silliness will be with us forever. You are thought of everyday buddy."
Grandma & Grandpa Kvittem cherish that Nathan taught anyone who spent time with him so much about acceptance. Anytime they spent time with him at appointments or hospitalizations he was always up for playing games or telling jokes. He had his moments when he was grumpy but they were few and far between. He was a great little man who taught acceptance, patience and great love without even knowing it. We all need to be more like Nathan.
Nathan will forever be remembered by his family and friends as Napey, Buddy, Budzilla, Napezilla, Little Man, Shmedium Man, Napey Pie, and many more loving nicknames. If you're ever wondering what Nathan would say, remember, “Have a good day”, “you sure about that?”, “See you later, alligator”, “I love you to the moony”, and “I love you more”.
Nathan loved to travel and he always made time for a good adventure. While his lifelong dream career was to be a famous youtuber, he surely had a more profound impact. He taught many lessons, to courageously love, to belly laugh, to always be kind, make time to be silly and smile, to persevere and have trust and faith that all is well.
"Until we meet again, buddy, We love you to the moon and back!"
