Born on September 15, 1933, Alfred "Alex" lived a long and meaningful life marked by devotion to his family, service to his country, and a warm, generous spirit that touched everyone who knew him. He was a loving, resourceful, and friendly man whose presence brought comfort, laughter, and strength to those around him. Throughout his life, he carried himself with quiet dignity and a sincere kindness that left a lasting mark on all who had the pleasure of meeting him.
Alfred was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, the eldest of three children born to Alfred and Sarah Carlsen. In his formative years, he attended Central Needle Trades High School in Chelsea, Manhattan, and worked as an usher at the renowned Roxy Theater. These experiences led him to a career in fashion and fostered a lifelong passion for music and entertainment. He often recounted his time at the theater with joy and awe, sharing stories of the many artists he had the pleasure of hearing and meeting.
After high school, Alfred proudly served in the United States Army as a member of the 3rd Armored Division and was stationed in Gelnhausen, Germany. His time abroad sparked a love of European culture and travel that remained with him throughout his life.
Following his military service, Alfred returned to the fashion industry. It was there that he met a lovely coworker, Teresa. Alfred and Teresa were married on June 15, 1963, at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Copiague, New York. They were soon blessed with their daughters, Christine and Marilyn. Alfred loved his family deeply and was a devoted husband and loving father. Although not Polish by heritage, he was embraced by Teresa's large family and welcomed into a loving community that he cherished deeply. He radiated support, encouragement, and optimism until his final days.
Alfred enjoyed many of life's simple pleasures. He loved fishing, traveling, boating on the Great South Bay, was an avid dancer, listening to big band music—especially the music of Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman—and watching classic films, particularly those starring Fred Astaire. These interests brought him great happiness and were often shared with those he loved most.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 62 years, Teresa; his daughters, Christine Fernandez, son-in-law Alberto, and Marilyn Poma, son-in-law Salvatore; his grandchildren, Thomas, and his wife Madelena, Michelle, John, and Michael; his great-grandson, Elliott; his beloved cat, Spanky; and many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Alfred's legacy lives on through the family he loved, the lives he touched, and the memories he leaves behind.
