Thomas was a lifelong resident of Long Island. A World War II veteran, Tom served in the Navy as a radio operator in the South Pacific and was present at the liberation of Guam from the Japanese. He was very proud of his military service and devoted most of the last 50 years to helping veterans of America’s military conflicts through his involvement in the American Legion. He held the posts of Commander of the Amityville American Legion Post 1015, as well as Suffolk County Commander.
Tom was a member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Amityville for over 60 years and continued to serve the church as an Usher until his death. He held a variety of office management positions in importing and distribution of consumer products. His strong work ethic kept him working past the age when many others retire. Over the years, Tom enjoyed gardening, and surf casting with his daughter, Jeanne, at Captree and Robert Moses State Park.
Tom was predeceased by his father, Francis; his mother, Wilhelmina; his step-father, Ercole (Ike) Compitello; his sisters - Madeline and Catherine; and his brother James. He is survived by his only child, (Ruth) Jeanne Drews and her husband, Dennis; grandson, Jeremy Drews; and great grandson Brice Drews. He is also survived by step-son, Charles Mortimer and his wife Linda; their children Ashley and Cody; his sister-in-law, Audrey Stone; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather at the funeral home on Friday, December 11th, from 2-4:30 and 7-9:30 p.m. The American Legion will conduct Services on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m, and the '40 & 8' at 7:45 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. at St. Martin of Tours Church in Amityville.
