

John was born March 30, 1940 in New York, New York to Margaret Bresnahan Skeahan and James Skeahan. John attended Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx and enlisted in the United States Navy after graduation. John learned the craft of elevator mechanics while serving on the USS Forrestal aircraft carrier and continued his career as an elevator mechanic after his discharge from the United States Navy. John maintained elevators in some of the most iconic buildings in his beloved NYC, a place that he endlessly explored on foot. Despite being raised in the Bronx, John was a lifelong fan of the NY Mets and enjoyed catching a baseball game at Shea Stadium on summer afternoons.
John was an aficionado of Opera and classical music, having attended his first opera at age fourteen. Throughout his life, John attended live performances at the Metropolitan Opera and on Broadway, often enjoying a date night with his wife Eileen. John enjoyed quiet pastimes such as walking, swimming, and reading mystery novels. John loved to dine out, exploring new restaurants and favoriting old haunts. He also enjoyed trips with his family to the Catskill and Berkshire Mountains.
Upon his retirement, John and his wife Eileen moved to Texas in 2006 to be closer to their daughter and granddaughters. In his retirement John was a dutiful husband and an active grandparent. John provided loving care to his wife until her death from Alzheimer’s Disease in 2017 and often participated in activities and special moments with his granddaughters. He was a staple at many lacrosse games and track meets, as well as band and choir concerts.
John was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease prior to his passing and, as his care needs became greater, he became a dear member of the St. Joseph Village Assisted Living community in Coppell, Texas.
John was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Eileen Skeahan, and is survived by his daughter, Margaret Skeahan, and granddaughters Kayla and Sarah.
