William Lavon Moffett, age 81, passed away peacefully at his daughter's home Thursday, March 27, 2025 in Copperas Cove, Texas. His family sent him off with love after a short, aggressive battle with cancer. William was born to Dorothy Nell and Justis Lavon Moffett and graduated from West Hardin High School in 1963 before being drafted into the U.S. Army in May 1964. William excelled in all things mechanical, tinkered like a pro, and had a loyal heart for his family, both immediate and extended. William was a Waco Valley Scottish Rite Mason since 1982.
William was a two-time Vietnam Veteran and retired from the US Army after more than 20 years of service. Shortly after being drafted, William converted to Regular Army and was appointed Warrant Officer on November 1, 1974, retiring in 1984 as Chief Warrant Officer Three (CW3) Moffett. Over the course of his career he was decorated with the following: Two Army Commendation Medals; Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross; Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon.
After his military career, William had several follow on careers: Technical Instructor for Central Texas College and the American Education Institute; Defense Contractor Instructor in Saudi Arabia; Maintenance Supervisor for the Texas Department of Corrections; and Commercial Construction Superintendent. For fun and to keep himself busy in retirement, he built guns and made knives, often building his own tools to meet this end. He also rebuilt cars and trucks, rebuilt engines of every kind, built his family and retirement homes, aided family in building their own homes, and completed renovations and repairs whenever needed. If you needed it fixed, he was the one offering the solution and willingness to help.
William was the oldest son of ten children and is preceded in death by his beloved parents, sisters, Dorothy Mae, Martha (Lucy) and Margaret (CheeChee), and cherished brother, Delbert Lee. He is survived by his children, William (Christy), Robert, and Koren, and by his granddaughters Chantaelle (Ceci) and Alexandra (Lexi), along with his remaining siblings, numerous nephews and nieces, and dear cousins.
According to his wishes, his family has organized two memorial services to honor William's life and military service. The first will be held at the Central Texas State Veteran's Cemetery on April 10, 2025 at 2:00 pm, followed by a Reception at Crawford Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen at 3:00 pm. William will be remembered by family in his hometown of Livingston, Texas at the Cochran Funeral Home on April 12, 2025 at 11:00 am, followed by a reception at the funeral home and Graveside Committal Service at Bluewater Cemetery in Livingston. His cremains will be interred at both locations.
