Mrs. Luker died on Saturday, April 5th at her residence. She was born in Cherokee, Alabama on December 30, 1919 to the late William Arthur and Mittie Florence Tucker Cox. She was the cornerstone of her family. Known as "Big Mama" to not only her family, but to everyone; often being called this by her children's, grandchildren's, and great-grandchildren's friends and as of late, the hospice caregivers that came by to assist in her as she made the transition from seeing this family to seeing her family that is in Heaven. She had many hobbies: gardening and canning what she grew, planting flowers (especially roses), traveling the countryside - mainly out west to Arizona, and reading: mainly her Bible.
While raising her family, she instilled in them three ground rules; and those ground rules have been passed down throughout the four generations of her family. 1.) Always follow the Golden Rule. 2.) If you can't say anything good, don't say anything at all. 3.) Never ask anyone to do for you, what you could do for yourself. She never had much to say, but when she did; it was something that could be taken to heart. Big Mama was not a proud or pious woman, she was a humble woman who walked by faith, feared God, and always put her family before herself.
Along with her parents, Mrs. Luker was preceded in death by her husband, James "Big Daddy" Luker; three children, Jerry Luker, Rheba Broadway, and Donna Derryberry; four siblings, Kelton "Ted" Cox, James "Little 'un" Cox, William "Big 'un" Cox, and Dorothy Jean Rhoton.
Survivors include three children, Myrna Luker, Jim Luker and wife Jackie, and John Luker and wife Ginger; two siblings, Troy Cox and wife Eva Jo, and Georgia Whitford; ten grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, an extended family and host of friends that was greatly loved.
