Father Deschamps taught me at St Mary High School in Prince Albert in the early 1980s. His progressive views of God and Roman Catholicism have shaped my life in innumerable ways. He remains the most influential person in my life to date aside from my parents. His faith and comfort in challenging his thinking set me on the right path in life. I often think of father deschamp ,he was ur family priest for many years buried many of ur family and also married many including myself. Was not aware he had passed, my condolences to the family I’m sure he’s greatly missed

Il me sera impossible d'assister aux funérailles à cause de mon état de santé de même que Jeanine (Boisvenu) Champagne.  Son fils, Daniel, est décédé et ses funérailles ont lieu demain le 9.  
Nous serons quand même avec vous en pensée.  Bon courage.  Nous gardons d'excellents souvenirs de Gaétan qui tenait toujours à faire partie de nos réunions, la dernière... les funérailles de mon cher époux. Roger.

We are praying for the repose of Fr. Gates' soul. He was a good friend and dedicated so much of his time to Marriage Preparation and Marriage Enrichment. He was a faithful servant.

So devastated to hear about his passing. He helped many people both in parish ministry and family services in the diocese. He was an amazing person and will be greatly missed.

40 years ago Father Gates was a teacher at my Junior High School called Boucher. Father was well respected and a favourite teacher of many of the students including myself. He was a giving man, I recall one winter Father had fallen on the ice and broke his arm. After many weeks of being in a cast and the break almost healed, he encountered 2 students fighting in the hall , without thinking of his own safety he attempted to break up the fight, which he did but not without rebreaking his own arm in the melee. I know for a fact that you are still on the minds of many of your past students as I recall retelling stories with former classmates only as recent as this summer. Father you definitely impacted my young life and for that I will always be thankful for being able to know you. Thank you

I am in Florida and will not be able to attend the funeral in body but I will be united in prayer.
 
"Gates" was a devoted man.... strong in his opinions which added to his drive and determination to get things done. 

WHen he returned to Cornwall my husband and I connected with him through  the Diocesan council and found that I had some family in common with him.   In order to pursue this family link  I invited him to supper on the weekend and he said he could not come since he was doing a Marriage Prep. on that weekend.  I asked with whom and he replied Just me and some video tapes  I immediately told him that I found that method to be impersonal   and we asked to join him to do some talks . We did...he liked what he heard over the weekend  from which came  a trust and friendship  that led to Catholic Engage Encounter in Cornwall.

I have met people while giving conferences in the Niagara region that sang  the praises of his involvement with Marriage Encounter and even Retrouvaille ( a program for separated or divorced couples who  wish to try and reconcile.  For years the people of that area said they would call him when in a bind and he would drive all day or all night to be the priest on their weekend.   All this to say that he devoted a great amount of time, love, energy to the sacrament of marriage. 

I held him as a dear friend close to my heart in his living and will continue to have a smile on my lips  and a prayer in my spirit for every fond memory of him that comes to my mind.
