It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Leila Grace Papic, who died on her 93rd birthday, Sunday, July 27, 2025. Born in Caron, Saskatchewan, Leila lived a full life defined by love, resilience, and deep devotion to family.
Leila was the heart of her family and the warm, steady presence we all called “Nan.” She was not just our Nan, but everyone’s Nan - welcoming, generous, and endlessly kind. She was as tough as an ox with a gentle soul, and she found joy in traditions of making donuts, traveling west to reconnect with her prairie roots on the farm, and filling her home with family, love and the most impeccable laundry you’ve ever seen.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gus Papic; her parents, Robert and Hessie Duffey; and each of her siblings: Elsie Jackson (Percy), Myrtle Freeland (Reginald), Nina Crump (Charles), Donald Duffey (Charlotte), Bessie Meeds (Wesley), and twin sister Laura Duffey. Leila’s passing follows that of her youngest daughter, Beverly Allaire (Papic), who left us in March - now reunited, their spirits forever side by side.
Leila leaves behind her devoted daughter Colleen Andrews (Bruce), and her adoring grandchildren: Justin Allaire (Emily), Carson Andrews (Sara), Stephanie Allaire (Mark), Anne-Marie Larose (Pat), and Nathalie Doering (Wesley). She was a proud great-grandmother to ten cherished great-grandchildren: Quinn, Pierce, Rowen, Hudson, Andrew, Sofie, Juliet, Addison, August and Chloe. She was also dearly loved by her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
The family would like to send heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Dr. Raj Menon, Dr. Adeola Adesanya, and the incredible staff at Cornwall Community Hospital (JMP 1) for their care and compassion.
The family will be in attendance at Lahaie and Sullivan Funeral Home – West Branch (20 Seventh Street W, Cornwall, ON) on Friday, August 29th from 10:30 am until time of service. The Service of Remembrance will be held in the Memorial Chapel of the funeral home at 12:30 pm.
In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Leila’s name to the CCH Foundation or Carefor Hospice Cornwall. Messages of condolences may be left at dignitymemorial.com.
