

May 24, 2023 Burton (Buddy Burt) Basney passed away, just 3 days after his 90th birthday in Mission Viejo, California. The whole family was there to help celebrate his birthday. He was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1933. His parents were Joseph and Dorothy (Emke) Basney who preceded him in death as well as his stepmother, Marion (Schram) Basney who raised him and his sister after his mother passed. He is survived by his wife Carol (Doane), sister Marlene Lang, stepbrother Robert Todt, daughters Barbara (Jim) VanDeVelde and Kristin (Steve) Lillard, grandchildren Joshua, Rebecca, Rachel, Joseph, Hannah, Seth and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Burt graduated from Capital Lutheran University in Columbus, Ohio with a major in Math Education. In 1962 he accepted a position with the Department of Defense teaching Army dependents in Ludwigsburg, Germany where he met his wife Carol and they spent 5 wonderful years teaching and traveling through Europe.
They settled in Sterling Heights, Michigan where he spent the next 24 years as a teacher and administrator at Cousino High School. After retirement in 1991 he and Carol moved to their cottage in Hillman, Michigan. They spent winters in Laguna Woods, California and continued to travel extensively.
Burt was a very caring husband, father, grandfather and friend who was always willing to lend a hand. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. He felt blessed throughout his life and as he titled his autobiography, “I wouldn’t change a thing!”
There will be a memorial service for Burt Basney on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at noon at the Brush Creek Mill in Hillman, Michigan.
