Daniel F. Borgmeyer passed away peacefully on July 6, 2015 in Laguna Hills, California, at the age of 73 from congestive heart failure. It seems ironic that a man with so much heart would suffer from heart disease.
Dan grew up in St. Charles, Missouri and was the only child of Albert and Mary (Maymie) Borgmeyer. As a high school athlete, he helped the St. Charles High School basketball team win the State championship in 1957, a fete that St. Charles did not repeat until 2015.
Upon graduation from high school, Dan served in the United States Army Reserves. He was called up for active duty under President John Kennedy during the Bay of Pigs crisis.
Dan loved music and at the age of 18 was a back-up singer for Ike and Tina Turner. It was an amazing experience but it was also a lesson in segregation and civil rights. He was required to enter the building through a separate entrance and sing behind a curtain so the audience would not know his race.
Dan attended Long Beach City College and Cal State University, Long Beach while working at McDonnell Douglas Corporation. He worked as an engineer at the Long Beach, St. Louis and Huntington Beach facilities on many aerospace projects such as the DC-9, F-18, KC-10, MD-11, and C-17 projects, and, more recently, the FCS (Future Combat Systems) project, fitting Humvees with technology in connection with the Iraq war. Dan retired from the Boeing Company, formerly McDonnell Douglas Corporation, in 2010 after more than forty years of service.
During the 1980's Dan coached youth sports in the City of Orange. He coached baseball, basketball and football, winning several city championships and making many lasting friendships with the parents and families of his players. During the 1990's he umpired high school girls' slow pitch softball as well as co-ed softball. More recently, he volunteered as an assistant coach at Edison High School in Huntington Beach, where he worked with the track and cross country teams in 2011 and then with the football teams from 2012 to 2015 as an equipment manager.
Dan's love of sports drew him to several part-time jobs, beginning as an usher at Angel Stadium for the Anaheim Angels. From there he worked sporting events for the Rams, Raiders, Lakers, Kings, Dodgers, Ducks, and USC football. He was chief of staff for the Summer Pro League and, until recently, worked as a production assistant at Fox Sports for the football, baseball, and NASCAR programs. Additionally, Dan worked concerts and other events at venues such as the Forum, Irvine Meadows, the Pond, and Barker Hangar. He loved his family and when possible, brought them to the venues.
Dan was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Elizabeth Borgmeyer, in 1965 and his father, Albert Henry Borgmeyer, in 1968. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, daughter, Melissa, son, Eric, four grandchildren, Miranda, Jonnathon, Nikki and Aimee, and one great-granddaughter, Chloe.
