"Daniel Edward Castor left this world Tuesday April 21, 2015 at the grand old age of 103, passing away peacefully at his home in Fountain Valley, CA. He had a marvelous life with much love and humor shared with family and friends.
Dan was born in South Sioux City, NE, and arrived in Los Angeles with his family as a teen, attending Huntington Park High School. He came of age at the onset of the Great Depression, and was proud of never being out of work through young adulthood. He married Helen “Billie” Carlile, and together they raised two lovely and kind daughters. After working at a variety of jobs, he trained and worked as an aircraft inspector for Douglas during WWII. After the war, he was employed by LA Department of Water & Power and M&M Broom Co. before becoming a bus driver for Montebello School District. Retired at age 65, he enjoyed the next 38 years as, in his words, a “professional loafer.”
Daniel is survived by five grandchildren, Robert (Lisa) Hanke, Jim (Caroldean) Hanke, Steve (Lynn) DeWilde, Jennifer (Dave) Taylor, and Jill (Frank) Cassidy. In addition, he is survived by eleven great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, two nieces and two nephews, and also a very dear caregiver and friend, Dina Cuppinger, who became close to him in his last two years. Known affectionately by the grandkids as “Papa”, he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life service for Mr. Castor will be held in Pacific View Memorial Chapel in Newport Beach at 10 am Saturday, May 9th."
