Donald Freeman Williams, M.D., F.A.C.S. was born on October 4, 1934, in Butte, Montana. After battling interstitial lung disease and various other health complications for the past year, he passed away suddenly on Friday afternoon, May 20, 2016. He was proud to be the son of Freeman Royal Williams and Vonda Larsena Olsen, both of whom have predeceased him. He is survived by his brother, Gordon Williams; his sister, Laura Midgley; his loving wife of 34 years, Nancy Williams; his six children, Scot Williams, Bret Williams (Nancy), Jolene Martinez (Nicklaus), Ryan Williams, Stephen Williams (Jenice), Michele Williams; and grandchildren Riley Pincombe, Natalie Williams, Caroline Williams, Isabella Williams, Graeme Williams, and Olivia Williams.
Don attended the University of Kansas, graduating with a B.S. degree in Chemistry in 1956 and a Medical Degree in 1960. An outstanding scholar, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa National Honorary Liberal Arts Society in 1955 and to Alpha Omega Alpha National Honorary Medical Society in 1959. He was awarded the National American Heart Association Fellowship in 1959 to study as a research fellow at the Institute of Cardiology in London, England. He returned to the states to continue his medical education as an intern and resident in Medicine at Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, Maryland. From 1964 to 1967, Don was a resident at UCLA School of Medicine in the Department of Urology and was appointed Chief Resident in Urology in 1967. In 1968, he moved to Newport Beach, opening a medical practice specializing in Urology and became a member of the medical staffs of several local hospitals, including Hoag Memorial Hospital where he, in association with James A. Brinton, M.D., practiced for the next twenty-five years.
In 1994, Don retired from the active surgical practice of urology. Afterwards, he became interested in the stock market and worked closely with his eldest sons. He also established URO Investments with his former medical partner, Jim Brinton. Together, they managed many properties around the United States until his recent passing.
While he received many honors in life from friends, patients, and peers, Don's greatest joys in life have been centered around his family. His love and adoration for his loving wife Nancy have known no bounds. His chest became a little more puffed up when he discussed the successes of his children and grandchildren. Don was especially pleased to have been able to care for his father, Freeman, during the last decade of his life.
Don leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humor and celebration. Whether it was a good meal, an incredible bottle of wine, or even a sunset, you could most often encounter Don finding joy in life and sharing it with others. Here's to you, Dr. Dad! You will be sorely missed, but ALWAYS celebrated.
