Dorothy was my younger sister just one year five months younger than I am. My parents were on the rhythm system of birth control. Obviously did not work well. Unfortunately my mother did not know that she was pregnant and took a drug prescribed by her doctor that affected Dorothy for the rest of her life. 
We moved to Costa Mesa shortly after Dorothy was born. My sister Barbara was born soon after so there were four of us. We lived on Fairway Drive. We all got chickenpox ,mumps ,and measles at the same time and were quarantined by the county. At some point Dorothy had to go to a special school in Santa Ana because of her learning disabilities. That was the first I realize she would have some struggles.
Dorothy at times, to say the least, was a challenge for our mother. I can remember her laying on the floor in Stater Brothers Market throwing a fit. Eventually she moved out to live at Fairview State Hospital. She would never come home to live with us full-time again.
She would come home often and always for holidays. Family was very important to her. She definitely would add a little craziness to our get togethers. Dorothy could be very brutally honest. You always knew if she liked you or not. She loved to be teased, to a point, and she loved to tease you back. She would always try to test you and ask you questions. Are you my brother? Are you my sister? Are you married to my brother? Why do I have a mouth?. If you didn’t answer correctly she would laugh and correct you.
Her love was unconditional. 
But five dollars and some candy or gum might get you a little closer to her heart. She loved to hold court at the dining room table with a Diet Coke and later coffee.
She was easy to please, something purple, an Easter basket without easter grass,  a super sized Big Mac meal with a diet Coke would all make her happy.
She loved music, especially the Beach Boys. She would play their “In Your Room “ song over and over again.

I met Dorothy in the spring of 81’, she was shy, quiet and weary of me, I was dating her little brother and she wasn’t sure about that. Once I told her that I worked where she lived she was a bit intrigued, we talked about her residence and my work location, we both like purple, obviously she more than me..…we became quick friends. Dorothy would visit me everyday and for the most part, all day 🙂. My favorite memory was when I was pregnant with Christopher and my belly was showing, she thought she was being a smarty pants and points to my bump as said “what’s that”, I responded “it’s a monkey”, she yells while kinda laughing and says “Nooooo” she gets more serious and tells me that’s not nice, it’s her nephew or niece, “then why did you ask”?  We would joke off and on about it until he was born , then I told her to come see her nephew…the monkey 😁 again the same response. Dorothy was always good to have fun with, and when she wasn’t in the mood you’d know it and leave her be. When I first met her she had long black wavy/curly hair down to the middle of her back, she soon cut it to the shoulders which looked great. A few years ago she came to visit at my house for Thanksgiving I think, I was so surprised to see the white hair.  Dorothy was one of a kind, I loved visiting with her everyday up until she was placed, she couldn’t wait to get out of there so she could finally eat chicken with bones in it. Dorothy was loved very much, and will certainly be missed, she’s now with her mom and dad and she’s happy.
RIP Dorothy and happy birthday. I’ll be sending you a note on a purple balloon, so look for it on Saturday 💜 Marianne 

Most of my memories with Aunt Dorothy are surrounding the holidays. It was always my favorite time of year since our whole family would get together. I will miss her playing and asking me questions she already knew the answer too just to make me answer… I’ll miss her asking for $5.. laughing at my dad all the time while she called him Chrissy… telling people they are cute…she always remembered my mom which was special and she loved to ask me who my dad was.. just I think for an excuse to call him Chrissy. I will miss seeing the siblings make her laugh.. I will miss seeing her smile.. 

 Dorothy you brought something special to our family. You will always be loved and will always be missed.  We will continue to celebrate you and your enjoyment for the simple things in life like your Diet Coke.. or McDonald’s burger.. Love you Dorothy. Love your niece, Sam 

Dorothy was a special soul filled to the brim with the love of her family. I will miss her consistent reminders of where Dylan came from and what everyone meant to her. May she find peace and freedom being surrounded by her loved ones who had passed before her. You will be missed by all who knew and loved you. 

I miss Aunt Dorothy always hustling everyone for money. She would go from uncle to uncle asking for a five or a twenty. After she was done she would come up to me and ask and I would say “what do you want it for” and she would respond with “a Big Mac and Diet Coke”. I will always miss her telling everyone that would listen and some of them that were just passing by that I was her favorite nephew. We love you Aunt Dorothy you will be very missed. 

Dorothy was always a light and brought great memories to the family. She will always be remembered for her caring and loving personality. We love you and you will always be remembered.

Family meant everything to Dorothy. She loved her siblings, nephews and nieces and missed her mother and father very much. She looked forward to coming home for visits because she knew she would get her favorite meal, Mc Donald’s. She always would get the same thing, a Big Mac, large Diet Coke, and French fries. I’m happy you are reunited with Mom and Dad, we will miss you. 

Dorothy always brought love and giggles to every family gathering. I’ll miss her smile & laugh. 

One of the memories I have about Dorothy would be her in her room listening to The Beach Boys song “ IN MY ROOM” playing it over and over again on the record player, at the end of the song you’d hear the needle scratch and move to the front of the song. She did love other Beach boys songs but that was one of her favorites

Dear Dorothy,

Thank you for lighting up our world and constantly making us smile. I feel so grateful to share the same birthday as you. 


Dorothy loved passionately and honestly. Her outbursts of love and anger reflected her protectiveness of her family. Not all were welcome into her inner circle. Luckily, after many years of sneaking her Diet Cokes and cash payments, I finally made it in. 
Dorothy, thank you for bringing love and light to our family. I know you are fully healed and surrounded by God’s love and our lost loved ones.
