

Dr. Jay Young passed away on October 31, 2010.He was 72 years old at the time of his death.
Dr. Young was born on September 29, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the eldest son of Ruth and Ben Young. His siblings, his brother Ronnie and his sister Judy preceded him in death.
Dr. Young was educated in Champaign-Urbana at the University of Illinois. He then obtained his Medical Degree at the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University in Chicago. He served in the Army Medical Corp and completed his residency in Urology at USC. Jay married Linda in 1960. When he had completed his residency they then moved to Laguna Beach where they have resided for 39 years.
Dr. Young was the founding member of South Coast Urology and was one of the first Urologists to practice in south Orange County. He practiced initially at South Coast Hospital and subsequently at Mission Community Hospital in Mission Viejo and Saddleback Community Hospital in Laguna Hills. He remained a leader of the medical staffs’ at all three hospitals throughout his career serving as Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff. He served many years on the Saddleback Hospital Foundation and was intimately involved in the fund raising effort that resulted in donations of over $100 million. This facilitated a major expansion of the hospitals ER and ICU.
When Dr. Young retired from his clinical practice in Urology he developed one of the first clinical research programs in the private practice of Urology. He was the co director of South County Medical Research Center until his death. He was the primary investigator on over 250 scientific studies carried out in conjunction with Orange County Urology Associates. He was to present an important paper as the lead author at the Western Section of the American Urology Association meeting just prior to his illness.
Dr. Young was active in many community and philanthropic activities. He has remained a supporter of many Laguna Beach programs throughout the years. He was president of School Power when his children Brian and Karen where in the Laguna School system.
Dr. Young loved the arts and dedicated his energy to their support. He has been on the board of directors of the Laguna Beach Art Museum and the Newport Harbor Art Museum. He has supported the Ca Dance Laguna Dance Group and the UCI Fine arts department.
In addition to the arts Dr and Mrs. Young loved to travel and have explored the world. They have visited far off places like Bhutan and the Galapagos Islands decades before they became eco-destinations.
His loving wife of 50 years Linda and his children Brian and Karen survive Dr Young.
A celebration of Dr. Jay Young’s wonderful life is planned for December 9 at 7:00pm at University Synagogue 3400 Michelson Drive, Irvine (corner of Harvard and Michelson). In lieu of gifts please send donations in his honor to a charity of your choice.
