What a sad & shocking piece of news! Mr. Thomas was my father’s attorney and he was such a kind, competent, respectful man. I was looking him up today because the family wanted to consult him. Such terrible news to find of his passing. I’ve known Mr Thomas for over 25 years. He has been my attorney through and through. Within those 25 years he became my friend and advisor. Always picked up the phone for me. Dearest Thomas Family,  my heartfelt condolences go out to you all.  I just knew Joel briefly as a client of his, and in those encounters I found him to be an extremely thoughtful and kind man.  In a day-and-age when the personal touch is lost in profession, Joel gave wonderful advice in truly caring about mine and my family's well-being and future.  His memory lives on with you all, as I am sure every day, he will be with you and yours.  

I’ve known Joel for years in our church congregation.  He was a very talented, accomplished and family-oriented person with an even and gentle temperament and a nice smile.  Even though he was a successful attorney, he was a servant in our congregation.  He gave excellent messages with a different slant than what we usually hear.  He often began with a joke to get our attention (even jokes concerning lawyers. . .) and then kept that attention during his message.  Joel was humble and a servant - willing to do tasks in our congregation such as security, opening the building, setup and cleanup of events.  Our sympathies go out to Shelly and the family.  He is missed greatly by many.

Joel was a kind and enjoyable friend for many years, and we miss him. He had a unique sense of humor and viewpoint on things which made our conversations interesting and entertaining. I enjoyed our time hanging out around the campfire and dinner together. Joel's messages were always interesting and thought provoking. Joel was a true brother in Christ.

Dear Shelly and Family,
It is with deep sadness of the passing of your beloved husband, Joel, and the father of Graham, Spencer and Michael. My heart and prayers for you all. I first met Joel when I was working at South Coast Hearing Representatives, along with his brother, Dennis. It's like just yesterday, remembering his kind, thoughtful and generous personality. He was so easy to talk with, and a good listener. Joel always had a great message to give at Sabbath services. He will be missed greatly. Love to you all!

It is with a sadness I recount one of my earliest personally favorite memories regarding Joel And You And Graham, and Spencer.  I don’t recall Michael or Dennis, my apologies.  I met Joel and You at church services in the mid-90’s.

I reminisce the NTBMO as a guest in your home.  Rack of lamb and all the fixins.  The meal was memorable but what sticks out in my mind more has had that lasting positive impression one gains when they meet eye to eye with like-minded brethren of the Lord.

Joel and you, now Graham too have been stalwart Ambassadors of Jesus Christ.  Joel always displayed that controlled spirit accompanied with wise counsel.  Joel’s leadership in the congregation will be missed as much as his presence.

I am glad to have known Joel and look forward with certainty seeing him again, leading 10 cities under Christ Jesus.

I can’t imagine the pain of losing a mate of 36 yrs and father of your children.  May the God of Mercy and All Comfort bless you, Graham, Michael, Spencer and Dennis with His Love during these times.

I have a special memory of spending the Night to Be Much Observed with Joel and Shelly and other invited guests at their home a few years ago.  My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed that evening.  Not just because of the delicious meal that was served and how beautifully the table was set, but because of the warmth and hospitality that we felt.  Joel was so engaging and made sure everybody was brought into the conversations.  We felt very comfortable and relaxed in their home.  The conversations were interesting and thought provoking.  No matter what opinion you had on a subject, you felt accepted and appreciated.  It was an evening of fun and laughter and there was a feeling of belonging, as if we were all one family.   I am so thankful to have had that opportunity to get to know Joel that night.  He wasn’t just a serious person.  He was a friend and a  fun guy to enjoy hangIng out with.  He will be greatly missed.

After attending Joel's celebration of life and hearing each of you speak, it is without a doubt that Joel's legacy will be carried through each of you.  He had the heart of a champion and genuinely influenced every person he met.  While I know that mine and others' loss is not as great as yours, please know that all of us are here to help each of you.  My deepest and sincerest condolences to your entire family.     

In memory of Joel, we did not interact that frequent but when I had the opportunity to have any conversation with him I always had the sense of his true  kind heart, morals, and judgements. 

I have known Joel for many years in our small community of worker's compensation.  He was someone I always looked to for guidance.  His smile and always cheery disposition (even when things weren't cheery) will be greatly missed.  To the entire Thomas family know that Joel was one of the kindest, honest and complete gentleman I have ever known. My deepest condolences to the Thomas family. I was an attorney with SCIF for many years so we met often. Joel was a kind and honorable person and a terrific attorney. He always did a wonderful job for his clients. He was always a pleasure to deal with even on the most difficult cases. I never once saw him lose his temper. He was the consummate professional and gentleman.  He will be missed.

My friend Joel was known by me to be a man who ultimately found answers for life and the law in God's Word. I will miss our conversations.

I am so sincerely sorry for your loss.  Our tight knit workers compensation community has lost a great fellow attorney and worthy opponent. I had many cases against Joel over the years and he always did his best for his clients and was a true professional. He was always kind and someone I looked forward to seeing at the Board. I am so saddened to hear of Joel's passing. Although I've only known Joel for 3 years, I will forever remember my hockeymate as a passionate and caring friend with a determination like no other.

I've played on several hockey teams as Joel's linemate where we shared so many great memories fighting for each other through good times and bad. His will to never give up will always be remembered. 

One of his favorite things to do was to screen the goalie, redirect and tip in those goals. But what I'll remember the most is that slapshot at full speed from the right wing to score top shelf. That was definitely his thing.

I cannot begin to express how devastating and heart breaking it was to hear of Joel's passing.  This is a tremendous loss to all of us at the Dimarco Araujo Montevideo family, and all of us who love Joel so much.  

I had the privilege and honor to have worked with Joel for close to twenty years. 

Although Joel was a Partner and Managing Workers Compensation Attorney at the firm. 
I never looked at Joel and thought, "that's my boss," it never crossed my mind. Joel was so much more, he was a mentor, a friend, an educator, and on many occasions my life coach.  

His door was always open for anything, and his counsel was invaluable.  

As an Attorney,  Joel served his clients with ziel and with the upmost diligence. There were so many cases that no other  lawyer wanted to touch,  but Joel saw the clients needs, not the difficulty or problems related to the case.  He always focused on the need of the individual first. 

Joel never ceased to amaze me, with every case we discussed, he always  looked at every case with compassion, which  to me, is the clearest testimony of his kind heart, morals, and judgement. 

Joel leaves behind so many lessons and  examples of how to live an honorable life.  I could only pray and desire to be half the man he was.  

It is hard to imagine life without Joel, but he does leave a big part of him in my heart,  and I will strive to make him proud.

It was an honor and a great privilege to have had Joel in my life, and to have known such a wonderful man.  

God bless you Shelly, Graham, Michael, Spencer, Dennis and the entire Thomas family. I am so tremendously sorry for your loss, for our loss...

based on the great words expressed at Joel’s Celebration, I’m sorry I didn’t have an opportunity to spend more time with him.  Joel was the first of the Thomas brothers I met while playing water polo for the CSULA club team.  At that time, I remember thinking how fun he was of a teammate.  Going to Hawaii and playing in the Rainbow tournament with your husband/dad, I will always cherish.  And, although I didn’t think it would be the last time I would see him, at McGaugh just days before his passing, I am so thankful I was able to meet up with him albeit for a short chat. 
You four are in my thoughts and prayers.  May Joel continue to look over you as you continue your life journeys.  I’m sure he will continue to be a proud husband and father.

Thank you, Dennis, for sharing that picture.  I had so much respect for Joel because of the way he carried himself.  Always so professional.  Always willing to impart knowledge.  My deepest sympathy to his loved ones.  You were blessed to have him and the memories of a life well lived will sustain you as you continue in your journeys.

Joel gave me wings to practice law in the field of workers compensation. Although I was new to practicing in this area, Joel had full faith in my abilities. We did laugh about some painful experiences I had to endure along the way of building my experience, but he had only words of encouragement for me. In due time, the success stories followed and he shared the happiness.  
I look up to him as a mentor who was always willing to  share his knowledge and experience, regardless of how busy he always was. He was  professional and respectful, and I know that his peers gave him the same in return. He was an excellent boss and I trust that everyone will agree with me. 
I will remember being part of the Saturday morning jogging sessions with him and a few others from the WC department, and also attending a few of his son Michael's hockey matches.
I have nothing but happy memories of Joel and still have a difficult time processing the news of his passing. I greatly regret not being able to personally attend the memorial due to the  pandemic, but my thoughts and prayers are with  Mrs. Thomas, Graham, Spencer and Michael, always.

Joel gave me my first opportunity in WC.
This was an extremely important opportunity in my career because P.I. had not been kind to me as a woman and minority. Where I wanted to be in the thick of things and litigate, I was relegated to defending depositions and  responding to or propunding discovery.
Surprisingly with WC, I was able to retu rn to my purpose in becoming an attorney.  Thats is, to be in the mist of things. Litigating, appearing before Judges to argue your clients case. Joel gave me that opportunity and I will be forever greatful.
Joel was my mentor as he was to many of us.
What I valued most about him was his quick smile, his quick wit and sense of humor.
What I appreciated about him is how he treated EVERYONE, no matter who you were, with the utmost respect.
Clearly, he was  a strong family man who doted on his sons and wife. He was a very proud father proud of his sons and their accomplishments.
I have lost my WC Encyclopedia in Joel.
He was always like opening up a WC book and finding the answers. Now I'm having a bit of a problem finding answers in general.
My deepest condolences to his Wife, sons and family.  Just know that he always had you first in mind and heart.

I found this picture from 1975 when Joel was a Freshman and I was a second year Junior, if you know what I mean.  My little brother.

We met Joel, his lovely wife Shelly and their sons almost 20 years ago. He always impressed us as a very kind, gentle soul that loved his family very deeply and was always ready to lend a hand.  He was very intelligent, a deep thinker and great speaker, and his messages at church were always unique and very interesting.  He left us way too soon and we will miss him terribly, especially his constant smile and happy demeanor. Joel! What can we say, he was always a Sunday Funday hockey favorite.  From his great friendship, coaching, and ever so sneaky slapshot to win the championships, Joel was a great guy to have on the rink.  Our Thursday and Sunday games together led us all to a great friendship that developed over the years.  He always spoke so fondly of his wife, their family, their travels, and how proud he was of his sons.  His great stories from work and the courtroom always had us entertained. 

We are blessed that Tony, Wes, Mike, and the other players went into immediate action to do everything possible to assist him that Sunday on the rink.  Our bench will be missing a player and our trips to Longboards will miss a friend, but our hearts will never forget how great of a guy Joel has been to each of us.  We know he's with Kevin starting a new league a world away for us to join someday.  Until then, all of us from the rink are sending the Thomas family our love, support, strength, and condolences during this time.  Stay well, we will miss Joel dearly.

Shelly, Graham, Spencer, Michael:  I am so sorry for your loss. The DAM Family, especially the Worker's Comp Department, also feel the great sorrow and loss of our Leader.  He was commonly referred to as JJT.  We will forever miss those Friday Worker's Comp Dept meetings in his office.  He was so comfortable imparting his knowledge and wisdom and advice.  He loved teaching the Worker's Comp department to be warriors for our client's, the injured worker.  He exemplified the meaning of a true fighter. He encouraged us all to fight the fight to no end as he did everyday.  I sure will miss those personal exchanges in our respective offices of almost 15 years of being honored to have worked with him.  "Hey Joel!; Hey Lup! What's Up?  I will tell you what's up.  Joel, you told me you wouldn't retire from the law practice until at least 70 years of age. Well, I guess you are continuing your endless work in Heaven now by watching over each and everyone of us that you touched  on this Earth as our Guardian Angel.  We love you forever JJT.

I loved and respected Mr. Thomas very much. He was an extremely kind man and excellent attorney. I had the privilege of beginning my legal career as a receptionist at DAM. He always treated me with respect and dignity in my time there. Truly a huge loss to all of humanity. Very grateful to have had an example of zealous attorney so early in my legal career. I will carry his devotion to the law and treating all with respect throughout my career.

We all have something in common as I read the other condolences, Joel was an awesome, kind person to be around . I worked as his legal Assistant for two years, loved it. The people on the other side of the veil are the blessed ones right now because they rejoice in welcoming Joel and visiting with him once again. My sincere condolences to Joel’s  family,  working  with him  in court was always a challenge and a pleasure. He will most certainly be missed. I’m sure he is going to be taking up some causes in heaven,  Prayers for the family at this difficult time.

Shelly, Graham, Spencer, Michael and to all of Joel's friends and extended family.  Joel was my brother for 63 years and I would choose no other.  

Growing up together we fought as brothers do.  But if either of us felt threatened, we were standing side-by-side.  He was always a better athlete.  It was a good thing I was always bigger.

We were separated for three years when I went to college and he finished High School.  But after that, we were always fairly close physically and emotionally.

Joel was the one that went to law school first.  I joined him a year later.  One of the best things about this experience is that we passed the same Bar and our Bar numbers are next to each other.

I lured Joel into the workers' compensation field.  Joel and I worked together for about 7 years during our workers' compensation careers.   That career was  just about 30 years ago for Joel.  I wish it had been so much longer.  

There are so many memories to share but most of them are stuck in my heart .  And right now they don't want to come out.  Joel was a true brother, who had my back as I had his.  

JT, my brother, I miss you so much.   

I know he is with our Lord and Savior and I should be happy, but he was my little brother and I never thought he would leave me.

I will miss Joel as a neighbor and fellow neighborhood board member.  I always appreciated his words of wisdom and enjoyed his company. Shelly, our hearts go out to you and the boys, and we will always be available to lend a hand whenever you need us.


I had the privilege of being the legal assistant to Joel at the Law Office of DiMarco Araujo Montevideo.  I had no prior experience of being a legal assistant, so the fact that I had Joel as the first attorney I worked with directly was a true blessing... The first couple of months that I was his legal assistant was a complete disaster, as I failed miserably (it’s a miracle he never traded me). I failed to calendar multiple hearings, and EVEN sent him to a deposition in Marina Del Rey that had been cancelled (till this day I still remember the name of the case of that depo, and I still tremble with fear.)  As A partner of the firm, Joel could have easily requested that I be replaced. But he never did so. He never gave up on me as his assistant. Instead, he helped me succeed as his assistant.  When the time came for me to apply to law school, Joel was the most supportive person.  Once admitted into law school, Joel always went out of his way to ask me about my studies.  He would always say to me "Renee, Law School is a Marathon." When I experienced the loss for my father, Joel's support towards me was incredible. I do not think I could have been able to make it through my work shifts and my finals at school without him checking in on me and talking to me. Joel was and is a major component to the foundation of my professional development... I could not have asked for a better boss.... I will always be grateful to him for the support he provided to me.  Joel taught me that in life it is important to be compassionate of others, it is important to be humble, when a promise is made to a client, you follow through and most importantly he taught me that no matter how difficult life gets you never ever give up.  I will miss him tremendously, and whenever I hear the phrase "go pound on sand" I will smile and think of my amazing boss Joel J. Thomas. Esq. as I am reminded to never give up. Thankyou Joel.

There really no words adequate to describe the sadness felt upon learning of our losing Joel. Although we represented clients with opposing positions, Joel was always professional and civil no matter how passionately he represented his client. Joel was always quick with a smile and loved sharing updates on family. Joel was truly one of the good guys and will be deeply missed.

I've known Joel and his brother Dennis for over 12 years. I've enjoyed working with them, and have learned alot from them.  I was so saddened to hear today about Joel's passing.  Our community has lost a kind man, and a great lawyer.

To Joel's family, I am a defense attorney who has had the pleasure of having Joel as my "adversary". He was always a true gentleman with integrity. We first bonded over hockey - my family and his both played, but we did this while opposing each other in court.   Joel is the guy I would call when I wanted to pick an applicants attorney brain on an issue, and he would do the same when he wanted to discuss a defense issue.
A noble opponent, wonderful guy, and we have truly lost one of the good ones.   I am so very sorry for his family, you should know, he talked about you with such pride, and always with laughter in his eyes.

Joel was one of the kindest attorneys I knew.  He was a fierce fighter for his clients but also showed civility as an opposing counsel. During a dark time in my life he gave me encouragement and I am truly grateful for his kindness. We will miss you Joel. My condolences to the family for the loss of a great man. 

I have known Joel for many years—first as an opponent in workers’ compensation cases and later when I worked as a contract attorney for his firm taking depositions. Joel was a passionate advocate for his clients and a consummate professional with opposing counsel. It was obvious he had much love for his wife and their boys. He was so proud of Graham who worked in his office and was following in his footsteps. He loved all his trips, but especially loved going with Shelley to Italy and France. He was looking forward to winding down and spending more time traveling. I am heartbroken for Shelley, his sons and his brother Dennis. The pictures you have shared show a life of fun and laughter—a life well lived. 

Joel was an excellent attorney and an even better human being. I always enjoyed having a case with Joel.  He represented his clients with skill, passionate advocacy, and class.  Joel always had a smile at the Board and he will be missed. My condolences and prayers to his family and loved ones. 

My husband was a client of Joel's.  He had a work comp back injury and was in need of surgery but we could not get approval.  My boss offered to pay for the surgery but that was not an option unless we started over with a new doctor. That would also be a long painful process and I was concerned for my husband's mental health.
Joel was a wonderful advocate for him and he literally saved his life.   He was always patient and kind with my husband and I. 
Joel was a wonderful caring man and I am so sorry that his loved ones lost him so early.

I had my first case against Joel in 2000. It was a very strong case for my client and frankly, I was surprised that Joel would take this case, since it wasn't one of the usual high exposure cases  that he was known to handle. I made an offer to settle before Trial and Joel told me that his client wanted her day in court. Joel conducted an incredible examination of his client that lasted all day. It was flawless and I probably objected twice just to show the Judge I was there. His examination ended at 3:30 p.m. and as we were standing in line to get a new date, he asked me whether my offer was still open and that he would recommend it. I was completely confused and asked Joel why he would settle now when he had done such an incredible job on direct examination. He told me that he had given his client her day in court and that she felt that she had been able to tell her story, he also told me that he knew that I would cross-examine his client aggressively at the next setting and that he wanted to make sure his client was satisfied with having told her story, not being cross-examined and some money in her hand. That experience told me what kind of person Joel was, he wasn't just and incredible lawyer but more importantly what an incredible human being he was. I have always held him in the highest regard, would try to beat him to shaking hands whenever I saw him in court and am truly saddened by his passing!

Joel was a great colleague of mine, a fellow Applicant's Attorney, and a good confident. I have many, many, many fond memories of times together with Joel at AC and especially on the swim team and waterpolo team, body surfing in Santa Monica on weekends, laughs around the dinner table. Those times are decades ago now but are memories like seem like yesterday.  Joel was always full of energy, laughter, and fun!    

We were born 6 weeks apart far across the country from each other (in California and Connecticut) only to meet at AC to become friends and part of the "hair-less four" who shaved our heads for a swim meet.  We would spend many hours swimming and having a great time in and around the dormatories  and swimming experiences.  I will never forget his smile and energy that made him so much fun to be around.
