Born on August 19, 1944, in Kansas City, Missouri, Karlene Brower’s early life was marked by resilience and adventure. After battling jaundice and secondary anemia as a child, her family relocated to California, seeking a warmer climate with abundant fresh produce. This back-and-forth journey between California and Missouri defined her childhood, enriching her experiences.
A vibrant student at Long Beach Jordan High School, Karlene thrived in various activities, including the Alpha Sigma Rho sorority, Anchor Service Club and drill team. Known for her social charm, she was an avid dancer and even showcased her talent on the television show “Al Jarvis Hi Jinx,” winning a waltz competition.
In a twist of fate, a beach party invitation from Terry Brower turned into a sweet romance after a brief hiatus, leading to their marriage on August 4, 1962. They initially settled in Lynwood, California, before moving to Anaheim for safety during the Watts riots. Together, they welcomed their two children, Zachary and Kristine, and Karlene balanced motherhood with a rewarding 17-year career at James Guinn School, where she became a beloved figure in the school community.
In 1991, Karlene joined Faith Lutheran Church in Capistrano Beach, immersing herself in church activities, from Altar Guild to Vacation Bible School. Her culinary talents shone through at church gatherings and home alike, especially with her crowd-pleasing “cheese potatoes.” With an eye for fashion inherited from her father, she enjoyed shopping with her daughter for special occasions and assisting customers at Mission Thrift and Gift Store.
A devoted sports fan, Karlene cheered for her son, grandsons, and the Kansas City Chiefs with unwavering enthusiasm. Her grandsons, Jacob and Sean, held a special place in her heart, and her faith in God inspired her joyful spirit.
Karlene Brower was more than just a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend—she was a dedicated servant of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her warmth and kindness touched everyone who crossed her path, and those who knew her always said, “Oh, we love Karlene!”
Karlene Joanne Brower passed away from sepsis on October 19, 2024 in Mission Viejo, California. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Kristine and Kenn McFarland, her son Zachary Brower and her grandsons Jacob McFarland and Sean McFarland. She was 80 years old.
