He graduated from Central High School in Washington, D.C. in 1941. In December 1941, the day after Pearl Harbor was attacked, Pete enlisted in the Navy. At UCLA, Pete met Arline Anderson in June 1944. They became engaged before he was sent back East for further Officer's Training including Bomb Demolition School. In 1945, he received Orders to report to the West Coast to await an assignment in the Pacific. Pete and Arline were married November 21, 1945, and in January he was sent to Hawaii and then Shanghai, China. He served 6 months in China and was honorably discharged.
