Michael Nii Armah Attoh, M.D. died in Irvine, CA, on October 24, 2014. Born in Accra, Ghana, on March 9, 1947, he was the eldest child of Emmanuel Nii Ayikwei Attoh and Mildred Agowa Attoh (née Quaye) both of whom hailed from Jamestown (Ngleshi), Accra, Ghana.
Dr. Attoh had his early education at the Methodist School in Accra, Ghana; and his secondary school education at Accra Academy School in Accra, Ghana, and Government Secondary School in Tamale, Ghana. He graduated with a medical degree from the University of Zagreb in Zagreb, Croatia. He completed his residency and fellowship in Internal Medicine and Hematology at Elmherst General Hospital/Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, NY. Throughout his life he worked as a Hematologist and Oncologist in private practice.
Dr. Attoh was a very well mannered, gentle and patient doctor who served his patients with great diligence, compassion and care. As a hematologist and oncologist, he often dealt with gravely ill patients. Despite his own battle with Multiple Myeloma, he continued to remain cheerful and provided care for his patients until his own health condition made it impossible for him to continue working.
Dr. Attoh lived in Irvine, CA, where he and his wife, Dr. Najma Latif Gandhi raised their family. He enjoyed vigorous exercise, traveling, watching sports (especially the Los Angeles Lakers, University of Southern California, and Chelsea Football Club), entertaining, participating in community events, and spending time with his family and friends. Michael was very kind and helpful to both family and friends. He will be greatly missed by his family members, many friends, patients, and professional colleagues.
His family is grateful to the medical and other staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Cardiovascular Medical Group for the care that they provided to Dr. Attoh during the course of his illness.
Dr. Attoh is survived by his beloved wife Najma Latif Gandhi, M.D.; daughter Ayesha Naa Ayeley Attoh Mahapatra and husband Robin Mahapatra; sons Faisal Oko Attoh, and Kamal Akwete Attoh; grandchildren Graham Akwetey Mahapatra, and Graham Akuettey Mahapatra; his siblings Edmund Attoh, M.D., Gladys Pabifio (née Attoh), Mabel Amarteifio (née Attoh), and Gertrude Nettey (née Attoh); and several close relatives in the United States, Ghana, U.K. and abroad.
