Born on August 14, 1949, in Lancaster, California, to Harold Ray Harper and Ruby Thora Harper, Michael spent his early years alongside his sisters, Nancy and Susan. The family later moved to Huntington Beach, where he graduated from Huntington Beach High School. A talented athlete, Michael went on to play college football at Brigham Young University while earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology.
In 1973, Michael married his high school sweetheart, Sandy, and together they built a beautiful life and family. They welcomed two children, Victor Ray in 1976 and Ginger Raye in 1979. Michael enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the banking and mortgage industries, becoming President of San Clemente Savings and Loan at the age of 32. His professional life was marked by leadership, dedication, and the lifelong friendships he cultivated along the way.
Michael’s family was his greatest joy. A proud and loving grandfather to Rayden, Jace, and Weston, he could often be found cheering them on at baseball and football games. Michael also tragically lost his son Victor in 2005, but memories of their travels, sports, shopping and the bond they shared always remained close to his heart. Known for his boundless energy and passion for life, Michael embraced physical fitness and personal growth. He earned his second-degree black belt in Kempo Karate in his 60s, enjoyed running, high-intensity workouts, and time spent on his ranch with his beloved Great Pyrenees, Beau.
Even after being diagnosed with Parkinsonism and Dementia, Michael continued to live fully, remaining active and steadfast in his determination to enjoy life’s simple pleasures—sharing meals, and celebrating with loved ones. He will be remembered for his physical strength, larger-than-life personality, deep warmth, and zest for good food, good vodka, smooth jazz, and time spent with family and friends.
Michael is survived by his loving wife, Sandy; daughter, Ginger; son-in-law, Kenny; grandsons, Rayden, Jace, and Weston; and his two sisters, Nancy and Susan. He was preceded in death by his son, Victor.
Michael will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona Del Mar. A celebration of Michael’s life will be held on October 4th at his home in Murrieta, CA. More details to follow.
Michael leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and joy—a reminder to live each day fully and to always raise a glass in celebration of life.
