Mr. Peter Shin was born on October 19, 1924 in Guangzhou, China. He grew up in a wealthy traditional Chinese family, and was the 4th of 13 children. However, he had never developed a character or behavior of rich second generation. On the contrary, he had been humble, frugal and diligent for his entire life.
Mr. Shin met his soul-mate Mary Leung in Macau when they studied in two different high schools having an inter-school basketball tournament, Mary was the cheerleader. After dating for some time they got married on October 10, 1946 in Macau and were happily living together ever after for 72 years. Happy life did not promise to be smooth and without challenges. Shortly after their marriage they moved back to China, and had experienced the threat of the Chinese civil war. Peter was shrewd enough to abandon his properties in China to flee to Macau with his wife and 2 toddlers, Polly the eldest daughter and Frank, the second son.
From 1950-1959, the young couple had to live separately in two different cities when Peter worked in Hong Kong, Mary was to take care of their five children in Macau, since the twin boys Stephen and Tony were born and then the youngest son Lawrence was also born.
God is so gracious and amazing! In 1953, salvation had been granted to the Shin family as Peter accepted Christ in Hong Kong while Mary had also decided to follow Jesus through the witnesses of their friends respectively. When Peter went home to Macau, he cast away all the idols. Mary was so shocked and surprised pleasantly as she was originally refrained from letting her husband know of her conversion to Christianity.
In 1959, the Shin family moved to Hong Kong since Peter had started his career as building contractor, which profession he had pursued successfully for 34 years until he retired in 1993, then migrated to the States where their daughter Polly and son Tony had already settled in Irvine, California. Though by the start of the sixties, Hong Kong had begun to flourish and continue with the economic progress, yet in general, lives were poor and difficult. By God’s grace, with his endurance and hard working nature, Peter was able to raise his 5 children to acquire higher education without deficiency till their adulthood.
In 1976 and 1978, adding joy and numbers to the family, God granted Peter and Mary 3 grand children-Dora, Karen and Putnam. A couple of years later, another 3 grandsons Victor, Benedict and Felix were born. Exemplified himself in practicing godliness, Peter would attend Hong Kong Baptist Church regularly, would insist all children and grand children going to Church and attending Sunday School every Sunday. He and his wife also served faithfully in various Church activities. From 2008 to present, God had blessed them with 4 more great grand children, namely; Abigail, Jayden, Tin Yui and Caleb.
In 1993, after migrating to the States, Peter adapted excellently and had joined Chinese Baptist Church of Central Orange County. With his past experience in the building industry, Peter was enthusiastic in contributing his expertise and advice in the Church building project. He had gained much love and respect from brothers and sisters due to his mild temperament. Peter took care of his health conscientiously as he would pay attention to his diet and would go physical check-ups regularly. Three years ago in 2015, he got a minor stroke but had recovered dramatically well. God allowed him to enjoy three more years of quality life with the family. He was able to drive to Church, for dim-sum with good friends, to McDonalds for breakfast with his wife and went grocery shopping, etc.
In August 2016, the children, grand children, their spouses and great grand children were able to re-unite in the States from Hong Kong and U.K. to celebrate the 70th Wedding Anniversary for Mr. and Mrs. Peter Shin.
On September 19, 2018, 3 a.m. Peter had a stroke at his home in Irvine and was admitted to the hospital. On September 20, 2018 he was recovered miraculously that he could even joke with the family and sang hymn with Alfred Lam, the friend from Church who visited him. However, on the afternoon of September 21, 2018, bleeding occurred in his brain and he became unconscious since then. The Lord blessed him though, to be able to sustain till September 26, 2018, 4.10 p.m., when all his beloved family members, local and from overseas gathered around his bedside, led by Pastor Herman Tang to pray, sing hymns and bid him farewell before he went home peacefully with the Lord, in eternity!
