Shuohong was born on August 20th, 1964 in Beijing. At the time, Beijing offers a slightly better living environment than other cities in China, so ShuoHong stayed with her grandparents until the age of two before returned to XiAn to live with her own parents. She lived in XiAn, and had her formal educations entirely through XiAn’s North West Industrial University facilitated kindergarten, grade school and then the middle school. After that, she’d learned that there was a better high school called the City’s 90th High school, so she went on there for her high school education.
Shuohong was a very bright girl who also studied very hard. She had always maintains high marks in her school works, and she had always been the pride of her parents. There was one time, right after China opened its door to the Western influences, the local university was going to show case a Hollywood movie for the first time ever to local students. It was a major event amongst the students, but Shuohong chose to stay in her room and do her homeworks instead. In 1982, as she was about to graduate from high school, Nanjing University was sending out scouts to top High schools around the country to recruit for top students. They met with Shouhong at the 90th High, and strongly recommended her to apply for Nanjing U. Without surprises, she scored the second highest on her college entrance exam among her own high school graduates, and was almost made it top ten of all the high school graduates from the entire Shaan Xi Province. She was accepted to the department of Bio-Chemistry at Nanjing U. She graduated from there four years later, and by the government’s policy at the time, she was assigned to work at the Nutritional Teaching and Research Lab of XiAn Medical Institute until she left for her advanced study in the U.S. in August, 1989.
Soon upon arriving to Chemistry department at Illinois U., Shuohong was very lucky to have met her future husband Shixiong Chen. At that time, Shixiong had already been accepted by Standford University’s PhD program, and was about to leave for California. Six months later, Shuohong also transferred to study at California State University, Fresno, and received her Master’s degree two years later.
After graduation, she worked for Syva, a medical device and solution company, and had obtained her Green card on October of 1993. At the end of that year, Shuohong returns to XiAn to visit her parents and sister. Unfortunately, in January of 1994, she was diagnosed with Glioblastoma (a form of brain cancer), and needed a surgery immediately. Shixiong flew to XiAn to keep her company, and so did Shixiong’s brother who came to XiAn from XiaMen (Southern China) to comfort her. Right before her surgery, she needs to be shaved clean on her head. Mother’s heart was hurting to see her daughter losing all her long and beautiful hair, but looking through the reflection of the mirror, Shouhong touched her bladed head and said, “…Now I looked more like that famous signer in the U.S…!”. Yes, that was our Shouhong!
The next day, with the caring love and support of those dears to her heart, Shuohong had her tumor removal surgery. Ever since she had been diagnosed with brain tumor, she had been very positive and strong in facing it. While in the hospital, she was always smiling and giving comforts to others who came to comfort her. After resting for about three weeks, Shixiong accompanied her back to the U.S.
Concerned with the fact that Shouhong might need someone to take care of her, mother applied Visa to the U.S. In the month of June, as Shouhong was once again being diagnosed with further tumor growth, mother arrived to the U.S. and accompanied her for her 2nd surgery. It was fortunate for Shouhong in a way, because this time Shouhong was having her surgery done in UCSF, which houses one of the best cancer surgery center in the U.S, and had Dr. Prado, a renowned surgeon in this field to perform the task.
In January of 1995, her father who rotates her mother’s roll in taking care of Shouhong arrived in the U.S. In September of the same year, since there had been no more abnormal growth diagnosed, they decided to take another relaxing trip back to the homeland. Shouhong was a very caring and considerate girl. She would remember other family members’ birthdays, and she would always have holiday or birthday gifts prepared ahead of time for their surprises.
Shouhong was a born again Christian and baptized at Chinese Church in Christ, Mountain View, Northern California in 1992. In October of 1996 she and Shixiong were happily married, and started to serve God together in ICCCC.
To everyone’s surprise, in 2008, after 15 years of dormant, Shouhong was once again being diagnosed with tumor growth! However, she still went back to China once more to visit her beloved family. This was even during her Chemo treatment in 2009! Our thought went with her as she returned back to the U.S. She had an emergency hospitalization on January 3rd, 2010, and stayed in hospital until April 13th, and she had endured seven different surgeries. During this period of about 100 days, Brothers and Sisters from various churches visited at her bedside every day and prayed for her constantly. Brothers and Sisters of the church also brought various dishes of food all the time and took turns in keeping Shuohong accompanied each night. Not being able to express gratitude in so many words, but we were all deeply touched and were grateful for all the loving and caring she had received.
On April 13th, Doctor had finally determined that there were no further medical means that could help her. Shuohong finally returned to her own home. Shixiong, her husband, who loves her so dearly, had taken great care of Shouhong. He had personally attended every minute details for her cares to the very end. His love for Shouhong imprints a lasting impression in all our hearts!
Her life might be short in comparison to many, but her life was filled with love; the love of God, the love of her parents, the love of her husband, her sister and her Sisters and Brothers from church. Indeed, she had truly being blessed!
At last, the Lord had ceased her sufferings and welcomed her soul into heaven!
May God bless her soul to rest in peace!
