Barbara Guidry Blanton passed away on July 11, 2015. She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Ruby Holder Guidry, her brother, Russell Guidry, and her husband, Jay Roy Blanton. She is survived by her sister, Carolyn Guidry Hilderbran, her children, Lauren Blanton (Daniel Canty), Stuart Blanton, and Dana Blanton, and her grandchildren, Jay Canty and Avery Canty.
Barbara was born in 1932 in Beaumont but grew up in Corpus Christi. She attended Corpus Christi High, Del Mar College, UT Austin, and CCSU. After teaching elementary school for two years in Corpus, she married Jay Blanton in 1955. Jay, a petroleum engineer for ARCO, had also lived in the Saxet Heights neighborhood where Barbara grew up – she would sometimes joke that she had married the boy next door. The couple lived in Denver City, Midland (where their children were born), Lafayette, and Richardson. In 1970, they took the opportunity to return to Corpus Christi. Barbara also returned to teaching. Her first job was at Booker T. Washington Elementary, but she spent most of her career at Menger Elementary. She especially loved teaching reading to kids. She was happily married until Jay’s death in 1975. She retired in 1994 but continued to be active in the League of Women Voters and the Nueces County Historical Society. She was a member of St. John’s Methodist Church.
Barbara’s passions were teaching, learning, her family and her community. She had an innate faith, a lively intellect, and a bright smile.
