Carol Ann Mayfield, age 85, returned to the Lord on May 3, 2023. She was born on February 23, 1938, to Mary Dabney and Jim Roberson in Brenham, Texas. She attended Pickard High School in Brenham before moving to Corpus Christi, Texas, where she attended Solomon Cole High School. Carol Ann married Bobby Jones of Corpus Christi and began nurse occupational training. The union produced three beautiful daughters – Jacqueline “Jackie,” Mary “Rudi” and Jennifer “Jenny.”
Carol Ann spent much of her life serving others, primarily as a nursing caregiver, social services provider for W.I.C. and later as a first lady. Her ministry role began when she married the late Rev. Calvin Mayfield, Jr.; together, they co-led Macedonia Baptist Church for many years in Aransas Pass, Texas. Affectionately known as “Nanny” by her family and many neighborhood children, Carol Ann had a special love for kids and was known for teaching, and transporting, young people all across Corpus Christi, to attend Vacation Bible School. She absolutely LOVED the City of Corpus Christi, and was extremely resilient, compassionate to those in need, outgoing and cherished by her family and numerous friends. Her family members often said that Carol Ann had more friends than anyone else they knew! But more than anything, Carol Ann loved Jesus Christ and always had a word of faith and encouragement for everyone she encountered.
Carol Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Dabney and Jim Roberson; in-laws, Martha and Joe Brown; spouse, Rev. Calvin Mayfield, Jr.; daughters, Jacqueline Jones Taylor (Bill Hannah) and Jennifer Jones-Moore; stepdaughters, Stella Mayfield, Evelyn Mayfield and Dorothy Mayfield; sisters, Ruth Smoots and Betty Jean Wilson; nephews, Melvin Ray Smoots and Marion Douglas Smoots; and nieces, Patsy Thompson, Charlotte Ann Smoots, Gloria Smoots and Sandra Miles.
