Concepcion "Chon" Obregon

Concepcion “Chon” Obregón passed away on October 18, 2011 at the age of 81. He was born on December 8, 1929 on Laredo St. in Corpus Christi, TX. At an early age Chon started working for his uncle, Felix Otero, Sr. as a truck driver in the cotton fields. They migrated to North Texas to continue the cotton and grain harvest. He formed a musical group, Los Trovadores Del Mar, with his younger cousin, Felix Otero, Jr., Tony Arredondo and Raul Mendez. Chon taught himself to play the Veracruz harp at a young age and performed all over South Texas, King Ranch and surrounding areas and was recognized by many radio and TV personalities. He especially loved and was passionate about “Son Jarocho” music from Veracruz. He also worked for Garcia Banana Co., CCISD and Braslau’s locally.

He is preceded in death by his father, Jesus Obregón; his mother, Regina Otero; infant brother, Elias Obregon; great-granddaughter, Gabriella Nichole Gonzalez and Francisca and Felix Otero, Sr. (who raised him as a son).

He is survived by his loving wife, Marta “Marty” Saenz Obregón; his six children, Jose Concepcion Obregón, Rosendo “Ross” (Alma) Obregón of Austin, TX, Esperanza “Hope” O. (Julio) Martinez, Consuelo “Connie” Gutierrez, Esther (Oscar) Gutierrez and Raul S. Obregón; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and a brother, Alvaro R. Obregón of Chicago, Ill.

Chon was a very humble, loving and forgiving husband, father and grandfather. He instilled in his children to have love, patience and forgive our fellow man. He will be dearly missed.

The family will be receiving friends on Friday, October 21, 2011 from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 pm that same evening at Funeraria Del Angel Chapel. Funeral Mass will be on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Randy Cain Celebrant. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Andy Obregón, Robert Obregón, Oscar Gutierrez, Jr., Scott Obregón, Alex Trevino, Chris Rios, Joey Gonzalez, and Adan Colunga.
