

Jose “Joe” R. Newman, 84, a long-time Corpus Christi resident, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2013. He was born in McAllen, Texas and settled in Corpus Christi with his parents, five brothers and sisters in 1940.
He worked as a motor repairman for Bradley Inc. and Smith Electric. He raised his own family in the close-knit community of Main Drive, in the Tuloso-Midway ISD. He was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church and of the Cursillos. He coached Little League and was also a member of the Texas State Guard.
Joe was known as a good neighbor and friend to all. He cherished his family and loved to dance, his children said. He valued education and was an eternal optimist.
Joe is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carmen D. Newman and his parents, Thomas and Marcelina Newman and brother, Tomas Newman.
He is survived by his seven children, Carmen Christensen (Brooks) of Humble, Texas, Enriqueta Newman (Alonzo) of Corpus Christi, Joe Newman (Linda) of Justin, Texas, Maria Newman (Dave) of Montclair, New Jersey, Mauricio Newman (Janice) of Dallas, Texas, Oscar Newman (Idar) of Austin, Texas and Carlos Newman of Tomball, Texas; ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; brother, Jesse Newman of St. Louis, Missouri; sisters, Manuela Roblez Newman of Corpus Christi, Mary Pumphrey of Los Angeles, California, Isabel Newman of El Monte, California; numerous nieces, nephews, friends and his long-time companion, Mary Nava.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Memory Gardens Funeral Home Chapel with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. that same evening.
Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 8, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with interment to follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park.
