
Kenneth Edward Wavell, 91, dies peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, December 28, 2010. He was born in Flandreau, South Dakota, on October 30, 1919, one of two sosne of Ella Wechsler Wavell and Urquhart Wavell. He spent his youth on a farm in Pipestone, Minnesota. He was educated at the University of Minnesota. He joined the Navy after Pearl Harbor and was in the first graduating flight class at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi. He met his wife, Cecile Cage of Taft while in Corpus Christi.
Ken served as a torpedo bomber pilot and fought in the battle of Leyte Gulf and later in the battle of Iwo Jima in WWII. He left the Navy as a Lt. Cmdr. and returned to CorpusChristi. Here he was in the wholesale and retail hardware business. He owned Gulf Hardware. Ken was an avis huter and outdoorsman and wond many skeet shooting trophies. He took great pride in providing a wild turkey for every Thanksgiving feast for his family of six childred. He and his wife were very active in the community. Ken was amember of Beachcombers and one of the first member of the Corpus Christi Yacht Club. They were founding member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. Ken enjoyed his daily gin rummy card playing group after retirement. He was a frequent winner and continued playing util two weeks ago!
In addition to his wife of 67 years, Cecile, Ken is survived by his six children, Pamela Wavell Clark (Paul) of Coleman, Georgia, Leland Cage Wavell of San Antonio, Claire Wavell Essing (Charles) of CorpusChristi, Zoe Wavell Gottlich (Mark) of Corpus Christi, Capt. Kenneth Edward Wavell, Jr. of San Anttonio, presently stationed in Afghanistan, Urquhart Arthur Wavell (Michelle) of Corpus Christi and twelve grandchildren, Cecile Baker Santini, Loring and Brewer Baker, Paul C. Clark III, Carrie Wavell Mark, Cage Wavell, Charles Essing, Lena Essing Comstock, Grier and Cecile Gottlich, Jason, Ted and Kristin Wavell. Funeral services will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church located at 622 Airline, Corpus Christi, Texas.
