Lydia Basaldu Nesmith, age 82, passed away on November 21, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born on October 30, 1942, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Cruz and Domitila Basaldu Sr., Lydia was a vibrant and accomplished individual from a young age.
As a teenager, she served as an officer in her high school marching band, where she played the alto saxophone. Her love for music was matched only by her passion for sports, particularly basketball. With determination and perseverance, Lydia graduated from Roy Miller High School in 1962, marking the start of a life filled with dedication and care for those around her.
After high school, Lydia embraced adulthood, staying active with her friends and eventually marrying the love of her life, David Vega Nesmith. Their marriage spanned 50 wonderful years, during which they built a life filled with love and family. Professionally, Lydia dedicated herself to nurturing others, working as a bilingual teacher’s aide with the Corpus Christi Independent School District and as a nurse’s aide at Driscoll Children’s Hospital—all while raising her two children. Later in life, she extended her love and care by raising her grandson, John.
Lydia’s life was rich with joy and purpose. She found happiness in dancing, listening to her favorite music, chatting with her comadres, and, above all, spending quality time with her family. Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those she loved will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
She is preceded in death by her husband David Vega Nesmith and her parents Cruz and Domitila Basaldu Sr.
Lydia is survived by her Son, David (JoAnn) Nesmith Sr.; and Daughter, Rhonda (Albert) Zamora Sr.; Also surviving are her grandchildren, John (Matthew) Nesmith, Destiny (Randy) Rodriguez Sr., David Jesse Nesmith Jr., Devine (Leo) Gutierrez, Lyric Zamora, Albert Zamora Jr., Dion Zamora, Valentine Zamora; seven great grandchildren; and her four siblings Ofelia Rodriguez, Juanita Ramirez, Ruben(Terry) Basaldu, and Cruz Basaldu Jr.
