

Tony Hampton Whitley, Sr., 83, passed away on May 7, 2025, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Born December 27, 1941, in Albemarle, North Carolina, to the late Clyde Hampton Whitley and Opal Almond Whitley, Tony was a Navy veteran, entrepreneur, and waterman.
Tony proudly served in the U.S. Navy, earning Honorman status in Company 60-065. He trained at the U.S. Naval Nuclear Power School, specializing in nuclear power and submarine operations. He served with distinction, attaining the rank of Electronics Technician First Class (ET1). His expertise in nuclear power and submarine operations led to his service aboard the USS Darter and USS Henry Clay, part of the first class of nuclear-powered submarines, before being Honorably Discharged in 1967. His service was awarded with the Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal, serving during the Vietnam War era.
Tony’s civilian career began at Federal Pacific Electric Company, where he contributed to the development of the first ground fault interrupter, a groundbreaking innovation in electrical safety. He served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of General Switch Company prior to joining Unican Security Systems in 1977, in Rocky Mount, NC. There, his talents in manufacturing, engineering and leadership propelled him through the ranks of Vice President of Sales to Group Vice President. Tony took immense pride in opening the company’s Brass Plant, prior to his departure. In 1986, Tony relocated to Texas and founded Security Hardware Marketing, running it until his passing. For Tony, work wasn’t just a job, it was a joy, a passion he lived and breathed. He never retired, nor did he ever desire to. Tony is highly respected and loved by many in the industry in which he served nearly 50 years.
Beyond his extraordinary work ethic, Tony, a true sailor at heart, loved being on the water. Over the years, he owned several boats with favorites like The Key Connection and Changes in Attitudes, on which he hosted unforgettable sunset cruises. Boating was his sanctuary, where his love of the sea, nature, music and freedom converged. He was always masterful on the grill, creating a fun environment to enjoy friends and family.
Tony is survived by his wife, Mary, their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, their children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother.
Mary’s unwavering love and care, especially in Tony’s final months, brought him comfort and joy until the end. In lieu of a formal service and burial, Tony requested his ashes be scattered in the ocean. A sailor to the end.
