

James E. Smail, age 89, of Coshocton, passed away on Friday, October 28, 2011 at his residence. He was born on January 20, 1922, to the late Fred and Daisy Mae (Norris) Smail. After graduating high school, Jim joined the Civilian Conservation Corps serving from 1941 to 1942. During this time he helped build the Crater Lake Damn in Utah. In 1942, Jim joined the United States Army Air Corp. He served in the Normandy Campaign, the Northern France Campaign, the Ardennes Campaign, the Rhineland Campaign, the Central Europe Campaign, and the Air Offensive Europe Campaign. Jim was a life member of the Union Grove Church of Christ, a 32 Degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite of both Millersburg and Coshocton, a member of the American Legion Post 192 of Millersburg, a member of the VFW of both Millersburg and Coshocton, he enjoyed fixing sewing machines, guitars, and just about anything else, he enjoyed spending time with his family and will be missed by all who knew him. On February 15, 1947, Jim married Ada (McCormick) Smail who survives. He is also survived by his children, Cole (Susan) Smail of Chillicothe, OH, Mark Smail of Hemet, CA, Christy (Wesley) Tubbs of Coshocton, OH, Kurt (Janet) Smail of Westerville, OH, Abby (Robert) Rice of Newark, and Andora (Ray) Evans of Jacksonville, FL; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Along with his parents, Jim is preceded in death by two brothers and seven sisters. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at 11:00 am at Given-Dawson Funeral Home, Coshocton with Pastor Robert Hines officiating. Calling hours will be held one hour prior. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, at Union Grove Church Cemetery in Holmes County.
