In September of 1953, Richard enlisted in the Navy. He always said no one had a better duty, as he served in Philadelphia, New York, Bermuda, and aboard the General Buckner on ten trips to Germany.
On April 10, 1966, he married his beloved wife, Carol (Binning) Shaw, who survives him.
Richard was the first local hire at Cyclops, now Cleveland Cliffs. He held several foreman positions before retiring as Safety Supervisor. After 38 years, Richard initiated talks with congressman John Ashbrook for Untaxed Saving Accounts for Peons. This led to the IRAs that are enjoyed by millions today.
