

passed away on Thursday, June 9th in the city of Newport Beach, where she resided. June had just celebrated her 89th birthday with family and friends. She went to sleep with her daughter Pat at her side.
June was born on June 1st, 1922. Her place of birth was Stewardson, Illinois on her family’s 80-acre farm. June’s parents were James D. Beals and Ida Florence Beals.
June was the youngest of 10 siblings; Earl, Archie, Chester, John, twins Don & Dale, Lillie, Leon, & May. She shared many fond memories of her childhood; creating a playhouse, and dancing at a local tavern with her siblings and friends. Chores June contributed were; helping with housework and assisting her mother in the kitchen preparing meals for the large family. She attended the Union School in Stewardson through the 8th grade.
June was married on February 1st, 1941, in Miami, Florida to spouse Cecil Scott Kern. She had two children; Scott and Pat. She was a loving and wonderful mom; always there to encourage her children in whatever they were doing. Fun family vacations were frequent trips to local coastal sites where they swam, explored beaches and fished from their boat. June often caught the largest fish.
June’s first job was at Staley’s, located in Decatur, Illinois during the 2nd World War. She later began custom sewing work with Modern Age Furniture while raising a family in Florida. She was employed as a seamstress for 45 years; eventually moving into independent assignments for interior designers based in Orange County. Career highlights included projects for both President Richard Nixon and Actor John Wayne at their local beachside homes.
June’s favorite activities were cooking, handwork, gardening, shopping and walks. She enjoyed travel to be with friends and family in Washington and Illinois. She also loved visiting through her extensive daily correspondence by mail and phone calls.
Places of residence in California varied from homes in Los Angeles, Orange and Madera Counties. She resided at her Leisure World bungalow in Seal Beach happily for the last 15 years.
She participated in the garden club, and attended other seasonal entertainment events.
June regularly went to church throughout her life, she sang in the choir for several years. She attended the First Christian Church of Leisure World for 16 years.
June is survived by; son C. Scott Kern of Marysville, Washington and daughter Pat J Woodward of Palm Desert, California. Her spouse Cecil Scott Kern predeceased her. Grandchildren are; Shelly Woodward, Will Kern, Allen Woodward, Thom Kern, and Paula Anderson. Great-grandchildren are; Samantha, Serena, Peyton, Ayden and Parker. She is also survived by many other very dear; nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws and friends.
Memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 26th at: First Christian Church of Leisure World, Clubhouse #2, and Seal Beach, CA. June’s memorial will be from at 11:15am – 11:45am, following the regular morning church service, which begins at 10:15am. Officiate will be the Pastor Gene Cherryholmes.
Place of interment is Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma, San Diego, California.

June’s favorite book of the Bible was Psalms. She loved reading devotionals from the Daily Bread.
June’s life revolved around her Family, Friends, Work and Church. She was a Beloved Friend, Aunt, Mom, Nana, Grandma & Great Grandma.
